Black And White Sunday

I took a series of pictures of Gambler and the Robin’s nest. Sorry to report the Robin must of gotten sick of Gambler staring at her and her babies the nest is now empty. Do birds relocate their young like cats and dogs do if bothered? I don’t see the babies on the ground so I hope she just moved them.

Memorial Day

I had a lot of fun shopping for the Memorial Day props for the dogs. I am so lucky the dogs don’t mind me dressing them up. I have been playing around with different editing tools on my photo shop program and a friend of mine helped me figure out how to put some color in a black and white photo. Get ready to see more of this as I think it is totally cool. Sugar’s mom over at GoldenWoofs takes pictures with a setting on her camera to have this effect and I was totally hooked after that.

Wordless Wednesday

Thank you for the great comments about the picture of Norman and I. He is my first male chessy that I have had since 12/23/2000. He has been the best dog ever! He means the world to me and I love him dearly. I found out Tuesday that he will need a bone biopsy done on his front leg. He has been limping for a couple of weeks and not getting better. The xray that we took showed a suspicious lesion on his bone. The bone biopsy will be done next Monday and hopefully I will get the results before the weekend. That is what brought about the picture of Norman and I on Wordless Wednesday. So praying for good results. Here’s another picture from that day.

Last Saturday I did a post on Gamblers Heartworm Blood Test.

HAWK AKA BROWNDOG says:

Hi Y’all!

Candy, my Human’s girl Chessie was heart worm positive when they adopted her. Not only is treating for heart worms hard on the dog, it is also expensive and requires the dog be hospitalized.

Hawk is so right. Treating heartworm disease is very hard on the dog as they have to be injected with a very strong medication that can have serious side effects. It is injected in the muscle once a day for two days then again in a month. The dog needs to have a complete heartworm staging done before the treatment which includes, blood work, xrays of the chest and sometimes a echo of the heart to make sure the heart is ok and can handle the medication. The dog must be kept completely quite for a extended period of time after the treatment. If the dog has to much activity the dead worms can dislodge from the heart and cause all kinds of problems. It’s not a fun disease so once again easier to prevent with monthly heartworm medication than to treat.

Great advice and glad his heartworm was negative. I asked about Delilah’s on her last visit and was told I didn’t need it checked. Is it normal to check it in the fall?

Jodi, every clinic has their standard of when they test the dogs. If a new client comes to our clinic and their dog has had a heartworm blood test in the past then we do it the same time it was done before. If a new puppy comes in we set the heartworm due date to be on it’s birthday. It takes 6 months for the heartworms to develop so if under 6 months of age we just start the puppies on heartworm medication and check them on their birthday. Some clinics will set heartworm due dates for March-April which is usually the start of heartworm season. Some clinics say the pets can be taken off of medication in the winter months when the mosquitos are in hibernation, so if taken off they need to be retested the next spring before starting medication again. We recommend year round heartworm treatment, we have had some warm days in the winter months and have seen mosquitos, plus they get the added deworming each month for intestinal parasites. We still require a yearly heartworm test before dispensing anymore medication since that is what the American Heartworm Society recommends. You never know when a pet spits out a pill or vomits up a pill or the pill doesn’t work so good idea to test each year. Some clinics have went to every other year testing but we still don’t recommend that. Better to be safe then sorry and know for sure your pet is negative.

This ‘N That Thursday

Where o where to start, I have been so busy and have so many little pieces to tell you I don’t know where to start.

This weekend I put up my hummingbird feeder, I had it’s first guest and I got a picture of it. It was late in the afternoon so the color of the hummer didn’t capture like I wanted but here is the first pictures of the little guy. Hopefully I will get better pictures later.

Sunday Morning we had a intruder, we woke up to a horrendous scream that sounded like it was in our yard. Got up and looked and sure enough it was in our yard. The neighbors peacock came down for a visit. I guess he thought we had a peahen for him. When I opened up the door he took off.

May 1st I got out our incubators and put some duck and chicken eggs in them to incubate for the next month in hopes to hatch out some birds for our training season. Ok the chickens are to go in the pen and give me some eggs for breakfast when older.

Chicken’s incubate for 21 days and ducks incubate for 28 days. The brown/pink eggs are the chickens and the green/blue/white eggs are the ducks. Here is a chicken piping the shell to make it’s way out.

Casey R. Chessie RIP 5/28/13

Tuesday my friend lost her Senior Rescue Dog. Dina adopted Casey as a senior dog, she only had a few years with him but from all the pictures and story’s she posted up you could tell she loved him and he loved her and together their life was complete. I wish more people would be like Dina and take a chance with a senior pet. They have so much to offer, they might not get to offer it for long but the time they do is well worth it. They teach us so much about life. All they want is someone to take care of them and treat them kindly and what they give back is so much more! The seniors need love too!

May the wind always be at your back, the sunshine in your face and may your legs run like there is no tomorrow. Peace my friend, shine bright tonight! Love you buddy and peace to your mom in the days, weeks, years ahead!

I made this picture video for Dina so she could have all of Casey’s pictures all in one place. She took all these wonderful pictures and will have them forever in her heart.

A Poem Dedicated to Senior Rescues
One By One
One by one, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can’t run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn’t belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can’t justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,

Duke is a 2 year old Chessie in a shelter in MO_New Madrid area. He needs to get to a home or at least a foster home, but he needs to be the ONLY dog. He loves people and even kids. He is a big boy at around 90 pounds. He knows sit and shake and walks on a leash well. He is neutered, and current-he has tested pos for HW which the shelter will treat. He was in a home so has been house trained also, and still remains clean in the kennel. His family could not care for him financially . Because he needs to be the only dog, he has been there awhile and will be one of the first to get pts when that time comes- also this breed is not in high demand in that area.

This is from CRROW facebook page: I rec’d word there is another Chessie (DUKE) down in Mo that needs help. He has been there 6 months and they feel he will not find a home in MO-he cannot go to a home with other dogs, but I was told he loves people so much, even kids. He is 2 years old, and weighs about 90-95 pounds. He has been neutered, and up to date with shots, but will need to get HW tx- They will do the tx if he has a place to go. Animal control is giving him time to find a place to go, but that won’t last forever-and he will be one of the first to be pts if that time comes. We do not have the situation to foster him where there are no other dogs at this time. If someone has a no other dog home and are looking for a Chessie to adopt-transport can be arranged.

My friend posted up this poem and the one at the end of the post on Facebook so I thought I would repost it as it is a lovely tribute to our fallen soldiers. Thanks Rachel!

The Last Soldier
When the last soldier passes on,
When armies are disbanded and militias discharged,
When weapons are abandoned and armor discarded,
Your mission will, at last, be over.
For you know the soldier’s secret.
Yours was not a mission of war
Nor a mission of ruin.
Yours was not a mission of destruction
Nor a mission of death.
Your mission was safety, security, protection.
Your mission was honor, loyalty, service.

Gamblers Heartworm Blood Test

Gambler is due to have his Heartworm Blood Test on his Birthday. Since his Birthday was May 13th I took him to work with me on May 17th and had his Heartworm Blood Test drawn. He was a good boy and laid right down and let Dr. Mary draw his blood with no problems, no movement, nothing.

Dr. Mary please hit my vein on the first try.

Thanks mom hold me tight, make me feel safe.

Hug me up mom, are we about done?

Yippie, my favorite time….a treat!

Ahhhh crap, time to go back to my kennel.

Gamblers Heartworm test was negative! I also ran a mini panel on the blood to check for diabetes, check his kidney and liver functions which were are normal. He is now good to go and take his monthly Heartworm preventive for the next year. Don’t forget to have your pooches heartworm test done and get them on preventive. Heartworm is a nasty disease easier to prevent then to treat.

Monday Mischief ~Guinea Hens

Yes Guinea hens can fly that high. They can fly but not for long distances, they fly as high as they need to to get away from danger. She didn’t have to climb but she sure made a whole lot of noise to ward off the mischief makers.

FLEA & HEART LIKE A DOG says: They would like to get some but not until Flea has more land and Heart like a dog would like them for the tick eating but her dogs would chase them and Delilah would eat the poop.

They do help out with decreasing the tick population. They do cover a lot of ground in one day. I catch them all over the place. My dogs love to chase them, they think it is a game to see how fast they can make them fly. They do make a lot of noise! I don’t ever see any poop so Delilah might be safe.
