Nothing But Norman #20

Happy Saturday Everyone!

Project16 - Copy - Copy - Copy

Today’s post is about what I am thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend. I am thankful for 13 years with this wonderful dog I call my soulmate. I will start out with a video I labeled “My Soulmate”.

Second is a poem my friend sent me that sums our relationship up nicely.

A TIME TO REMEMBER —————— They come into our lives for such a short time a time we wouldn’t trade not even for a dime Then before you know it the years have flown by and then all of the sudden we’re saying good-bye

It wasn’t that long ago we said our good-byes we held on to you tight as you closed your eyes Your spirit has flown home on the wings of a dove into God’s loving arm’s; in heaven above

Over the days we’ve shed many tears but the memories we have will live on for years We feel your presence and we know that your near you’re keeping us safe and calming our fear

We think about memories from years past when you were young and strong and ran so fast we remember all the great times that we all had how you always made us happy never made us mad

They were the best and happiest years we had we’ll always look back on them and never be sad We look forward to the time we’ll be together again and we thank the Lord for such a great friend

Now you run and play up in Heaven above cradled in God’s arms covered with his love Playing by the Bridge waiting for the day we come down thru the meadow to the bridge to stay

The love that you showed us we’ll never forget because to us you’re one very special pet You’re like a star in the dark of night always watching over us with the Lord’s light

So now we take time to remember our best friend who will always be with us even to the end We’ll always remember you the way you were one big lovable huggable pile of fur

John Quealy

Now what I am thankful for:

1. I am thankful for our foundation stud HRCH Sand Spring Norm Of Caroway MH. Norman was the one to start Sand Spring Chesapeakes. Without him we would not be where we are today!

2. I am thankful for all the firsts we had with Norman.

He was our first Chesapeake to run AKC & UKC hunt tests. I am thankful for being able to do his first training when he was young and to handle him in all 5 AKC Junior Hunter tests to receive his JH title at 10 months of age.

He was our first Chesapeake that we sent to a trainer for advance hunt test training. Through this training we became friends with a really nice family so we are more than just clients we are like family.

He was our first Chesapeake to go on to receive his AKC Senior Hunter title, his Master Hunter title and his UKC Finished title.

He was our first Chesapeake that taught us how to run hunt tests and how to hunt with the best.

He was our first Chesapeake that we bred and got HRCH Sand Spring Hurricane Nellie SH “Nellie”.

He was the reason for our hobby bird farm.

He is the reason his picture is on the Chesapeake breed profile page on Westminster Kennel Club website.

3. I am thankful for all the friends we have made because of Norman. He had a way about him that made people fall in love with him and strike up a conversation with us which lead to some really nice friendships.

4. I am thankful because of him we have his son Gambler (who has some pretty big paws to fill) and his daughter Nellie who produced Glory who is a part of our family.

5. I am thankful for Norman being a clown and showing us that life isn’t all about being serious.

6. I am thankful for the many things he has taught me about life, living and loving!

7. I am thankful for so many other things that I could go on and on about.

I really have a lot of blessings to count and to be thankful for with this furball I call “My Soulmate”.

The out pour of love still comes in. This week I got a surprise letter from heaven with some warm socks and the most beautiful bracelet ever.

DSC_0918

The bracelet is my favorite colors which are now my new theme colors for Sand Spring Chesapeakes with a beautiful Chesapeake pendent. This bracelet is to remember Norman’s legacy and all that we have created in the Sand Spring line. The socks are a inside joke as I said no one would lay in Norman’s spot in bed which is on my feet because they thought he was hiding in the bathroom and would come out anytime and raaah them so the socks are to keep my feet warm until Norman’s great-grandaughter takes his place.

I can not thank my friend Amy enough for all the thought that went into “my letter from heaven” and for the thoughtful gifts of love. I have the best friends, the best support system and much love to guide me during my difficult times. Thank you all and much love back!

Last but not least on this last day of Movember. Norman want’s to share in the Men’s Health Awareness month along with Prostrate Cancer Awareness…

DSC_0666

DSC_0669

Did you know that male intact dogs can get prostrate and testicular cancer? They can! Norman had a enlarged prostrate that was giving him grief so we had to have him neutered when he was 11 yrs old. Luckily we had prior seamen saved on him so his baby making days can still happen even know he is gone. So if you have a male intact dog you should do monthly testicle checks on them to and make sure their isn’t any abnormalities.   If they are having urinary issues when older it might be because of prostatitis, so get them in and have that checked.

That bracelet is awesome! What a cool present to remind you of Norman.

Jan K says:
What a lovely, thoughtful gift from Lydia….so many wonderful ways to remember Norman

It was so kind of Lydia to send you that bracelet…what a thoughtful surprise.

Yes indeed was it a thoughtful surprise, I look at it and instantly think of Norman and smile. 🙂

That would make a pretty background for a Christmas card!

You are right Jan, it would make a pretty background for a Christmas card. I have no idea what kind of bush/tree this was but it sure stood out with all the red berries on it.

Glory is still moving the wood pile. That pile that she is sitting by I moved up onto the deck and now every time she goes outside she grabs one. The lawn if full again and yes the bigger the better!

LOL! What silly head-gear! I’ve never seen those before!

Are those reindeer antlers on your heads?

Those would be little turkey drumsticks on their heads that I got at Bartz’s party store. LOL

They’d probably rather be hunting turkeys than modeling headgear! Yes, I know dogs don’t hunt turkey (do they?)

Just a couple years ago the DNR passed a law that we can hunt turkeys with our dogs. We have taken them a couple of times but never got one but when we do get one we throw it for them and they do go get it and bring it back.

Today’s Slimdoggy FitDog Friday post is about Hill Training to help build hind leg muscles. Here is what SlimDoggy has to day for today: Last week, we discussed the importance of working your dog’s hind legs to keep their strength proportionate to their front legs and prevent atrophy as they age and introduced the Slimdoggy Squat exercise.  Another great exercise that you can do with your dog to build their hind leg strength is called hill repeats.
It just so happens that while we were hunting/exercising with Glory and Nellie yesterday we were doing Hill Training and didn’t even know it was going to be featured on today’s post. So here is Nellie doing Hill Training.
photo 1
They were also working on squats as they had to squat under fallen trees.
photo 3
They also took a moment to strengthen their neck muscles and stabilize their back legs when they stuck their head in a big hole.
photo 2
This week we went hunting on Sunday for a couple of hours, then Wednesday we were invited on pheasant farm hunt so Gambler and Glory got to do some hunting to keep up with their FitDog exercise.

MK here, I am thankful that brother Gambler broke my leg. That way I don’t have to live in the marsh and fend for myself. I have a cozy home that I live in now with constant food and pets and I get to sleep on the bed with two humans and 3 dogs.

Nellie here, I am thankful for my daddy Norman god rest his soul. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here today. I was very blessed to have spent 9 years of my life watching and learning from him. He was my mentor, he had pretty big paws to fill but I think I’ve about filled them.
glory
Glory here, I am so thankful for grandpa Norman rest his loving soul, without him I wouldn’t of had my mom Nellie and hence I wouldn’t be here today. I am also thankful that I was the chosen one out of 4 girls. I don’t know what was so special about me but I’m sure glad they kept me. I have been so blessed to have many birds in my life already with many retrieves in Saskatchewan. Can’t beat that!
Page3
Gambler here, last but not least I also am so thankful for my daddy Norman. Even know he cracked my skull when I was a little puppy I am blessed to be alive today (I guess that is why I was so naughty to MK, I hope the cycle stops with her) and able to call him my dad. He was one special chessy and I hope one day I can be just like him. I am also so thankful that my mom and dad still have me. I’ve given them many reasons to send me to doggy jail and they still love me so for that I am ever so thankful and will try to be a good boy in the years to come.

Monday Mischief~Wood Chuck

How much wood could a Chesapeake chuck if a Chesapeake could chuck wood?

Glory would be happy to answer that question!

I Glory chucked all this wood from the wood pile to the middle of the lawn.

This is the wood pile outside our door. When we let the dogs out to go to the bathroom Glory can’t run past the pile without grabbing a log then carries it out into the lawn. She can haul some pretty big logs around, we say she is building up her neck muscles to carry back a big bird when she needs to.

Nothing But Norman #19

Happy Saturday Everyone!

Project16 - Copy - Copy - Copy

This week a owner who bought one of Norman’s puppy’s from his last litter (Gambler’s sister) shared this video on Facebook. I love this video and never tire from watching it. Every word is so true! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Going along with this video is my favorite poem about dogs. This also says it all!

Just A Dog

From time to time people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “That’s a lot of money for just a dog,” They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for “Just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “Just a dog.” Many hours have passed with my only company being “Just a dog,” and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought  about  by  “Just a dog.” In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “Just a dog” provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day.

If you, too, think its “Just a dog,” you will probably understand phrases like “Just a friend,” “Just a sunrise,” or “Just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “Just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

For me and folks like me, it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday people can understand it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “Just a man or woman.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “Just a dog,” smile, because they “Just Don’t Understand.”

Yesterday I hung up the memorial I made of Norman. It’s a picture of him I had taken back in fall of 2012 with my dad’s old 20 gauge model 12 shotgun. This was my first pheasant gun. I had took Norman’s paw print when he was still alive and then colored it brown with a small cattail. This is hanging above my bed so he can look down on me while I sleep.

New_DSC_0723

I got this beautiful keepsake which can be a ornament from Harmony Pet Care. I took this picture of Norman earlier in the year at Harmony, they have the best background there so I always get some pictures when I take the dogs with me to work. They picked out the perfect picture for his memorial ornament. Thank you Harmony!

New_DSC_0725

Thank you all for the beautiful cards you send John and I. We are blessed to have such a great group of friends.

DSC_0648

The picture of the chessie in the middle is Norman’s granddaughter Savannah.

The most thoughtful gift was from a fellow blogger that I have never met and just recently started doing the See Beautiful Blog Hop. The blog hop is held the second Friday of each month. It is all about seeing beautiful and sharing it with others. When Norman passed it happened to be the week of the See Beautiful hop. Lydia from See Beautiful emailed me and asked for my address as she wanted to send me a little of See Beautiful so I can look at it and see the beauty in Norman and hopefully make me smile during this sad time. This week I got the package and it was a See Beautiful bracelet that is just beautiful, it came with a note and a card with See beautiful words on along with a description of what the card was made of. The card is recycled paper with forget me not’s in it so I am to rip up the card plant it and watch beauty bloom on day. What a sheer act of kindness. You fellow bloggers are the best and I can’t thank Lydia and you all enough. Just the smallest gestures mean so much to people. When you think all it was nothing, it really was something big.

Oh, there is something good there in the brush – can even see those tails a-waggin’.

Must of been a really good smell, they didn’t flush anything out so my guess is rabbit or deer turds. Yes their tails are wagging all the time. They just love to hunt!
DSC_0701

They probably have tons of toys they could play with too, and they end up choosing that to chew on!

Yes your so right, they have all kinds of toys. I guess I shouldn’t complain they don’t eat the tootsie rolls so this might be better?

images (3)

Oh My. God! I can’t believe you put a picture of your dog with a turd coming out up on the blog. I laughed so damn hard. Thanks for the chuckle!

LOL, yes yes I put a picture of a pooping dog up. I love poop and love taking pictures of pooping dogs. Why not share the joy, hey? Got people’s attention and hopefully they will scoop their poop.

Sara is beautiful. I wonder if she has PRA? I hope she finds a wonderful home, but at $200 for a senior dog with vision issues, I fear she may linger on foster care for the rest of her days

I agree to Linda, the adoption is kinda high for a senior dog but I do understand their reasoning’s, they need all the money and resources they can get to keep adopting out pets, maybe they will lower in if no bites and she can find a good home.

Nellie it's ok Pruven to the rescue, you don't need to be sad anymore.

Sue at Talking Dogs says:

I have to say, I am really impressed! That stuff would be mighty handy!

I always would swear by a product called Equalizer sold at vet clinics as I would always have a bottle of that on hand and it would clean up anything. But I have to say this Pruven is giving it a run for it’s money. So far it has cleaned up everything I needed it to.

DSC_0970

it needs no words it says so much. and it’s just wonderful

You are so right easy. No words needed. I just love the American Flag and Glory was named after it along with after Lady Gaga’s song Edge Of Glory. This was taken on my last photo shoot with Norman. I saw the flag and wondered if I would be able to get a picture of Glory with it being it was so high up in the air. I think I did a fine job getting a photo of both Glory’s.

Nellie got a bird.

Nellie got a bird.

Happy 3rd 29th birthday!!! I saw that you went pheasant hunting on the face-place. Glad you got your allotment. Will you eat the pheasant? I don’t think we have ever had that here.
Yes Oz we eat the pheasant. Of course it tastes like chicken :D. It is a white meat. The breast are delish, I make it simular to chicken. It a recipe calls for chicken I have been substituting pheasant since we have been getting so many of them. I recently made pheasant enchiladas and they were fantastic. I don’t care for the legs as they are full of tendons and tough and you need to watch out for little steel pellets from the shot to get the bird.

Run Run Run

Run Run Run

More Run Run Run

More Run Run Run

The pooches had a long day on Wednesday for their hunting day. We went hunting with a puppy from one of Nellie’s previous litters. Riley is 4 yrs old and had a lot of energy when it comes to hunting. When we first let the dogs out of the truck they had to run as fast as they could and play grab ass. That is what we call chasing after each other and trying to grab them. They did this for awhile until they figured out they should be sticking their noses to the ground and picking up scents instead of grabbing each others asses. We had a 6 hr hunt and got our 4 birds. It was a day of running, walking, stopping to take a break (but not for long) and off hopping threw the bogs in the marsh, running threw the water and more running, walking, running. They really got their work out this day. They were poop’ed by the end of the day and curled up on the couch to take a snooze. Senior gal Nellie kept right up with them.

This ‘N That Thursday

this-n-that-3eskie_1_white

Today we are joining 2 Brown Dawgs & co-host Ruckus the Eskie  for their This ‘N That Thursday’s blog hop!
This is what they have to say about the hop,

A little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

“This ‘N That Thursday is for anything you want!  Maybe you want to post about unrelated topics, or each topic isn’t quite long enough to make up a whole post, or you have awards to share, or you have one long post…anything goes!  So grab the button and join the hop!”
If your my Facebook friend you might of known it was my 29th Birthday for the 3rd time on Monday. I had a binge of eating free Birthday meals to desserts that co-workers brought in to a delicious cherry pie my grandma made for me which I ate 4 out of the 6 pieces. So after all that sugar overload I needed to get some exercise. I managed 6 hours of exercise on my day off yesterday and of course my furkids were right with me exercising right along with me.
We pheasant hunted with my friend who has Nellie’s daughter Riley. We got our limit which was 4 birds but it took all day.
Here are the photos:

MK is doing so well. She is looking like a adult kitty now. She still plays with the dogs and thinks she is a dog. When it is time for bed and we go upstairs she runs right along side and jumps on the bed, curls up in a ball and sleeps with us. She spends most her time up on the bed. She doesn’t hardly want to go outside and if she does she comes back in after a few minutes as it is too cold out.

So that wraps it up for today, why don’t you hop on over to 2 Brown Dawgs & co-host Ruckus the Eskie see what their up to and grab the badge and join the hopping fun!
