This book was written for children to show them how lovable shelter animals can be and to also increase the awareness of the plight of shelter animals. I hope you think Diesel is as adorable as we think he is!

Here is the review I wrote after reading this great book: This was a well written cute book about a shelter adoption success along with getting the word out on adopting from a shelter vs buying a dog. I loved how she incorporated Diesels mom into the book to get the word out that she still needs a furever home. Just after I read this book Lilly got adopted. What a happy ending. Great pictures to go along with the story.

Monday Mischief~Foam Pad

It seems most mischief happens on Wednesday. This is due to the account that I am out of town for two days and the dogs are locked up during the day while we are away at work. Even know Grandma comes over several times a day to let them out and run a bit they still seem to take it out on me on Wednesday mornings. After getting up early two days in a row I like to sleep in a bit on my day off. The other Wednesday this is what I woke up too……

Nothing But Norman #41

Happy Saturday Everyone! Be sure to scroll down to the end of the blog to see where Norman is being featured this week.

Today we are going to the annual American Chesapeake Club “WI Chessie day’s”. The first time we attended one of these events was when Norman was 6 months old. The host was Sandy Dollar who owned Norman’s Grandpa. I currently train with Sandy each Wednesday. Patti Maye has been the host for the past several years. We go when their isn’t a hunt test going on so this is the year to attend again, a time to meet up with other chessie owners and talk about what we love “our chessies”.

Of course I will have my camera and take tons of pictures so stay tuned to find out how our day went.

Norman’s puppy (Gamblers Sisters) has a new hunting title

Earlier this month “Annie” earned her HRC Started title (SHR) owned, trained and handled by Ken Shaw. She is now She is now SHR Shaw’s Go Gett’em Annie. Way to go Annie and Ken, congrats you have made me proud doing what we have bred these dogs to do. You can also check out Annie’s modeling career with a photo of her on www.pureloveforpets.com. She is the chessie with the cat by a present. You can enter a contest to win great stuff from Paw it forward with Purina.

FitDog Friday~Ducks and Pink Bumpers

This weekend we did some land and water training, the dogs were getting fit in both venues. Today’s pictures were taken on our land training. We used ducks on the marks and then pink bumpers for the blinds.

For the most part when training and running marks the dogs do several sprints and then a long run-hunt may happen when they lose track of where the bird went. With blinds there may be several starts and stops with pivots to get their next cast. So they are working several muscles and doing several types of fitness when out training.

Thursday Barks And Bytes~A Treat and A Award

The Barks:

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to win a give away going on over at Barking From The Bayou. Melissa did a review on Little Eatz gourmet goodies for dogs and humans which was fantastic, you can read it here, so I entered the give away in hopes that I would win as I really wanted to try them as they are for humans too. Guess what????? I won!!!!!!

The dogs loved these treats and so did I. So far I only tasted the cinnamon crunch and it was delish. I think these treats will be great to keep in the truck on training or hunt test days so I could give the dogs a treat and if I am hungry I can have a snack too. Tuesday’s Tails and National Pet ID Week

ABOUT YUKON

My name is Yukon and I while I might look like a bear, I am as sweet as they come. Here are my vitals:

Approximately 2-3 year old, neutered male Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
House-trained and good in the house
Has all vaccines, and is chipped
Velcro dog â Nervous in car unless Iâm in front seat, nervous on walks
Gun shy, high prey drive and flight risk so 6? fence yard is required

No one will ever know how I got into the situation I was in or for sure how long I was on my own. My story starts in north of Minneapolis, MN where I was sighted running loose in a rural area in Sep 2013. The neighbors saw me on and off during the fall and early winter. When it got cold and snowy, the neighbors decided to try and catch me, but I would have not part of it. They fed me good food and tried and tried to lure me in with meat but I would not allow them near me. I survived one of the worst winters in years because of the generosity of the neighbors and my smarts. The neighbors fed me and provided me with water.

I slept on top of a large buried natural gasline where the ground was warmer and the snow was not too deep. At the end of March a group of volunteers offered to try and catch me with a live trap. They set up the trap and within 4 hours I was in custody and could not have been happier! I kissed my rescuer the entire 2+ hour drive to his house. Even though I STUNK, Greg stayed with me in the garage all night. The next day he took me to meet Pam from the Chessie Rescue of WI and that is where I am today.

I LOVE to play fetch and I LOVE toys!

I am a big, happy and gentle boy. I love being someoneâs dog and I NEVER want to be away from my human again. However, I have some fears and I am a runner, NOT a fighter! I am fine in my foster homeâs 6â fenced backyard, I feel safe. When I go for a walk I become nervous and barky. I do not like loud noises. I am gun shy and if given the chance I will RUN. My instinct is to run away from things that scare me and to chase critters that might be fun to chase like deer, rabbits and squirrels. I do not like to hear angry voices. I have very good house manners. I need a safe, secure and patient forever home.

Because I am a flight risk, my new home will require a 6â fence and a kind hearted, patient person or two.

THE FENCE IS A FIRM REQUIREMENT-THIS DOG IS A HIGH FLIGHT RISK.

I want to be a lap dog and I love to snuggle.

I love playing with one of my foster brothers but the other one is mean to me because I am bigger than he is. However, I would never challenge his authority, I just want to be friends. I am very submissive. I LOVE to retrieve and could play ball ALL DAY.

I just want someone to love and keep me close and safe. Oh and I LOVE TO SNUGGLE!

National Pet ID Week 2014 – April 20-26

Whether your pet is a Houdini-wannabe or never seems to leave your side, some sort of identification is a must-have. Celebrate National Pet ID Week by making sure your pets have their ID ready!

There are many options to choose from, and your best bet is to have at least one, but preferably two of the following:

Tags:

In many jurisdictions, a rabies tag and city license are required accessories for dogs, and sometimes for cats as well. Even if you aren’t required to buy a license for your cat, your veterinarian would be happy to give you a rabies tag with your vaccination certificate. The numbers on both of these tags can be used to find you if someone finds your pet.

ID tag: a tag with your pet’s name and a couple of contact numbers is the quickest way to be reunited with your pet since the person who finds him or her can just call you directly. While it shouldn’t be instead of a license and rabies tag, it saves time because the finder doesn’t have to call the town or the veterinarian before you can be contacted.

Benefits:

· Tags are easily seen

· They identify your pet as lost rather than homeless right away

· Finding you is fast and simple

· You can get a temporary tag when you are travelling with your pet that has your local contact information

Drawbacks:

· They can become separated from your pet

Tattoo:

A number is tattooed in the ear or on the thigh; many breeders do this for their pups.

Benefits:

· It’s permanent

Drawbacks:

· It can become faded or distorted over time

· It can be hidden by fur

· Many people won’t know to look for it

· You have to remember to update your contact information with the tattoo registry if you move or get a new telephone number

Microchip:

A tiny electronic chip imprinted with a number is placed near the neck or shoulders using a simple injection. It is quick and nearly painless to do.

Benefits:

· It’s permanent

Drawbacks:

· Your pet will have to be taken to animal control, a veterinarian or the city to be scanned for a chip

· Some scanners don’t read some brands of chip

· You have to remember to update your contact information with the chip company if you move or get a new telephone number

Even if the risk that you’ll be separated is low, the consequences are too awful to contemplate. Getting your pets their own ID is simple, inexpensive, and if you’ve ever spent even a moment panicking when you couldn’t find your furry best friend, you’ll know it’s totally worth it.

Mischief In Poop Hunt

It’s Scoop That Poop time again.

This months theme is “Poop Hunt”. Brought to you by our great host’s Sugar The Golden Retriever, Oz The Terrier and My Pawsitively Pets.

The poop hunt begins.

I wonder who the Mischief drop a load in front of the steps was??????

Gman’s on it, scoop that poop before it is tracked into the house.

One should always Scoop That Poop, especially when someone drops a load right next to the steps to the deck. We don’t want any 2 or 4 leggers stepping in the poop and tracking it into the house.

April is Heartworm Awareness Month

The American Heartworm Society (AHS) has developed a series of heartworm life cycle illustrations for Heartworm Awareness Month. These professionally designed illustrations are available in two versions—one for pet owners (shown below) and one for veterinarians and clinic staff. These illustrations can be downloaded for FREE, and are suitable for use in client handouts, on your clinic website or Facebook page, in staff training materials, or to print and post in the exam room.

The AHS recommends year round administration of a chemoprophylatic drugs (heartworm preventative) to prevent heartworm disease, control other pathogenic and/or zoonotic parasites, and enhance compliance.

One big reason to Scoop That Poop.

Poop contains zoonotic parasites which means the parasites can be transmitted to humans. Yuck huh? You can get human parasites from touching animal poop.

In case where people are lazy and don’t Scoop That Poop it is a GREAT idea to have your pet on a Heartworm Preventative and to give that preventative once a month all year long.

Did you know that most Heartworm Preventatives will control intestinal parasites like Roundworms, Hookworms and Whipworms? That is one reason why it is recommended that you give the preventative all year long so that your pet is dewormed monthly. Another reason why you should give the preventative year round is that you never know when you are going to have warm weather and you don’t have to worry about if you gave the last pill at the right time in the fall/winter. Most Heartworm Preventatives prevent heartworm disease by working backwards, meaning the pill you give on the 1st of the month will kill anything that is in the bloodstream from the month prior not for the current month you give the pill. So if you stop giving the preventative in November because you think it is too cold out you won’t be killing the heartworm that may have been transmitted in October. This happened to my out of state friend, her dog came down with heartworm disease. She gave the last pill in October and thought she would be ok as they had some cold weather. She now is going to give the medication year round and not take the chance again. We had our first case of Heartworm Disease also at the clinic last week. It was a dog that was rescued from down south and adopted out up here. It did have a negative heartworm test in December of 2013 that was negative but it must of been infected and the microfilaria were not old enough to release the antigen needed for a positive test.

Heartworm Disease is a deadly disease, intestinal parasites are transmissible to humans so lets give that Heartworm Preventative once a month all year long and don’t forget to SCOOP THAT POOP!
