Happy Saturday All!
September 1st is the start of the Wisconsin early goose season. Back in 2010 I was invited along hunting by my buddy Justin who just happens to own Norman’s granddaughter Riley. Riley’s story is a remarkable one. She was born 12/9/09 by Nellie. This was Nellie’s second litter. When Riley was about three weeks old and starting to walk around outside the whelping box I noticed her back right leg wasn’t moving correctly. I watched and watched her walk and took a video to send to my boss and said “something isn’t right”. I took her to work with me the next day, took a xray and sure enough the right leg was broke. The ball of the femur that is seated in the hip socket was broke right off. I then went back and watch the video’s that I took from day one and on day three I could see her little leg not working right at that time. We came to the conclusion that she must of broke it when she was born, or Nellie stepped on her after she was born. Regardless she had a broken leg. There was nothing we could do at this time since she was only three weeks old. I started physical therapy and as often as I could do it, I did therapy on that leg. I kept her until she was 12 weeks old, re xrayed her and the bone had healed back together. It was amazing! I couldn’t sell her so I gave her to my buddy Justin who has his own guide service All Seasons Adventures in Wisconsin. Riley has retrieved many birds and has’t had a problem with that leg.
Our hunt 9/15/10.

Here is my favorite picture from that day in color. We are also joining The Pet Parade.
This weeks Fit Dog Friday is digging into the video archives. Nellie was a FitDog when she was in hunt test training with her trainer. She would get out and train 2 times a day. That kept her in really good shape. Here is a video of her training for hunt tests.

I have a long over due thank you that goes out to Sugar The Golden Retriever and Larry Kay the author of Life’s A BARK. I won this book back in June and finally I had time to read it. I don’t know why I didn’t find the time earlier to read it as it is a excellent book about how dogs can teach us about life and love if we just listen to them. This book made me think after a bad hunt test weekend, I would read it and then it would make me smile. It put failing hunt tests with Gambler into perspective. It comes with some really beautiful pictures of dogs.
Thank you Sugar for hosting the giveaway and to Larry for giving away this great book.
Next I would like to thank Sue over at Talking-Dogs for hosting the give away of Jan Dunlap’s book Saved by Gracie. I was much faster at getting started on reading this book. I took it with me to a hunt test last weekend and finished it in one day. It had me tearing up in the beginning, middle and end. I couldn’t put this book down. Dogs truly are amazing creatures that help us out in so many ways.

Yesterday Glory had another AKC Senior Hunt Test. We only got to train once this week and it wasn’t pretty so I told John he was going to be running Glory. I’m glad he ran her because the judges set up a couple of meaty tests.
Just a bit of mischief during the land series. It was a control break so Glory was called back to run the water series. She ran a good water series which she passed so she got another ribbon and her 3rd leg towards her AKC Senior Hunter title. One more leg to go which we will be trying for this next weekend.
Gambler had all kinds of Mischief himself as he ran another Master test and he made it to the second series where he lost his mind and thought he didn’t need my help and he failed. He will be running the next two weekends so he has time to get the mischief out of his system and pass a test this summer.

Happy Saturday All!
Just over a week hunting season will be upon us. This was of course Norman’s favorite time of the year as he was a hunting dog and loved to retrieve.
A little goose hunting.
Those silo’s and this field where we are hunting is my grandma’s land. It made hunting with Norman there even more special.
He was always aware of what was going on.
Always laying right by my side.
My favorite part was when he would put his head on my leg and claimed me as his and how he let me know he would protect me.
When I got home from work yesterday there was a very special package waiting for me. I knew my online friend and Gamblers Auntie sent me something. I had no idea what it could be and how very special it really would be. I opened up the package and all I had to see was the first word Star and I knew right away what it was and then the tears came as I read the rest. On November 6, 2013 Norman became a Star, today that Star has a name, a very special name: HRCH Sand Spring Norm of Caroway MH.
Here is where Norman’s star is. His is the one with the red circle around it.
For those of you who don’t know me, I love stars. I have the stars of the American Flag on my leg right next to Norman and Nellie’s portraits. I love to sit and star gaze and let my mind wonder. My mind was wondering on the way back from Saskatchewan trip, you can read about it here in Nothing But Norman #13.
My favorite Trans Siberian Orchestra song is After The Fall. I could replay this song, over and over and over again.
The Star Certificate found it’s place right next to Norman’s ashes.
Shine bright my love and may your brightness show me the way to you each night the stars are in the sky.
Hugs Jayne for such a thoughtful gift.
You too can do something special for someone or yourself by getting your own star from The Star-Registration.
