Nothing But Norman #98

Happy Saturday All!

Project16 - Copy - Copy - Copy

This week I planted a new Blanket Flower in memory of Norman.

Norman just loved the blanket flowers I had when he was around. He was always in the flower garden sniffing the blanket flowers and laying by them. I let me beds get out of hand with weeds and such so I’m not sure the patch of blanket flowers will come back this year so I planted a new one for him.

After a good sniff in the flower bed it was time to enjoy the scenery from the deck.

Last weekend I also did some crafty projects and made gingerbread scented Normans Candles. Made of just beeswax to light for all the animals over the rainbow bridge.

Set Up And Test Dog~FitDog Friday

When you train for hunt test competitions you need to set up your training tests. You need to set up holding blinds (for throwers or remote launchers to hide behind), need to set up blinds (stations set up with just birds to practice handling skills yours and your dogs for blind retrieves) and set up decoys out in the field to distract the dog running. There are many different things you can use to set up a training test and many different ways to set up a training test. Since Nellie is retired from competitions but still hunts she doesn’t get to train with us on a regular basis since my car only holds two dogs so when we are at home training she gets to be the set up dog as well as the test dog because everyone needs a test dog to run first and make sure there are no “bugs” with the test you set up for the other dogs running. If there are now is the time to change the set up.

This day we were setting up blinds at the pond so Nellie got to walk along with carrying her bumper after she retrieved it from me throwing it.

Ok mom throw the bumper already! I will throw the bumper in the pond to give Nellie some swimming exercise which is great exercise for a older dog with joint issues.

She still likes to fly into the water.

Blazing a trail through the pee soup.

Nellie you need to leave the bumper there for the other dogs.

After we set up the blinds at the pond we set up a test in the marsh and Nellie got to be test dog for the live flyer we were shooting during this training test.

Here I go, here I go.

I got it.

Since Nellie is 10.5 years old we don’t want her to have to do difficult tests but she still needs to get out there and get some exercise and why not be set up and tests dog because there has to be one and she fits the job perfectly.

Where Are We At With Glory’s Breeding? Part 1

Where Are We At With Glory’s Breeding? Part 1

I’m going to back track a bit to the beginning for a moment so those who haven’t been following along since the beginning know the phases of Glory’s breeding and will finish with where we are at now and what comes next.

I have been planning this breeding with Glory since last December 2014. Glory has had her health clearances done a head of time so I didn’t have to get any of that done. The tests I have done on Glory are genetic tests that should be done before you even think about breeding. Genetic diseases can be passed on to the offspring . You need to research your breed of dog and what genetic diseases they can come down with, what tests are available and have them done so you know what you are working with when breeding your dog.

(This is a condensed list, I plan on doing a reproduction series in the future that will explain more about what each test involves)

The genetic tests that are recommended for Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are:
• OFA Hip and Elbow Radiographs
• CAER (OFA Eye Certification Registry) formulary known as CERF (Canine Eye Registry Foundation)
• DM (Degenerative myelopathy ) a progressive disease of the spinal cord in older dogs.
• EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse) muscle weakness, incoordination which can lead to life-threatening collapse after small amount of exercise.
• prcd-PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) disease of the eye that caused the retina of the eye to degenerate slowly over time.

Other tests that can be done are:
• Shoulder and Knee Radiographs
• Cardiac exam
• Long coat gene
• ED/SF (Congenital Ectodermal Dysplasia/Skin Fragility Syndrome) a skin disease that is self limiting- which means if you produce an affected puppy it will most likely die within hours of birth.

Once you do the genetic tests on your dog you need to look for a stud dog that complements your dog in structure, temperament, working ability and other desirable qualities. You then need to compare the genetic tests and breed accordingly .

After you pick your stud, line up the breeding then you wait for your bitch (female dog) to come into heat (estrus). Female dogs come into heat usually twice a year every 6-8 months (except Basenji and Rhodesian Ridgeback that cycle once a year).

The heat cycle according to Wikipedia: Dogs
A female dog is diestrous and goes into heat typically twice every year, although some breeds typically have one or three cycles a year. The proestrus is relatively long at 5–7 days (9 days), while the estrus may last 4–13 days, with a diestrus of 60 days followed by about 90–150 days of anestrus. Female dogs bleed during estrus, which usually lasts from 7–13 days, depending on the size and maturity of the dog. Ovulation occurs 24–48 hours after the luteinizing hormone peak, which is somewhere around the fourth day of estrus; therefore, this is the best time to begin breeding. Proestrus bleeding in dogs is common and is believed to be caused by diapedesis of red blood cells from the blood vessels due to the increase of the estradiol-17β hormone.[13]

Once the breeding takes place and the bitch ovulates her eggs it takes 24-72 hours for the eggs to mature, for this reason if doing natural breeding you should do multiple breedings to have the male dogs semen there at the right time for fertilization. Once mature and fertilized the eggs float around in the bitches uterus until about 17-21 days when they start to implant into the lining of the uterus. At this time their placenta develops and are called fetuses. Pregnancy confirmation can be done by palpation a experienced person should be able to palpate the fetuses between 20-30 days after last mating. A blood test and ultrasound can be done at 25 days. Pregnancy or gestation is usually 56-66 days with a average length of 63 days.

Right now Glory is at the implanting stage. She is at day 17 of her breeding. During this time we don’t want to stress her out so she is relaxing and hopefully implanting little poopy puppies. Next week I may take her to the clinic to be palpated and then a ultrasound the week after.

Back To The Drawing Board Worked~Monday Mischief

After last weekends double AKC Master Hunter fails for Gambler we had to go back to the drawing board. The first pass Gambler got was while I was away with Glory and John was handling him alone. Since that seemed to work for Gambler and John I asked John if he wouldn’t run him again this weekend by himself as I would be staying home. John agreed. So off John, Gambler and Glory went to the hunt test. This was the first time in the whole 14 years of playing this game that John and I didn’t go together when we had the chance to. This was sad for me, sad that I couldn’t watch, sad that I couldn’t take pictures, sad that I couldn’t spend time with the other participants. Sad I must be if this is what it will take to have Gambler pass and receive his title. The sadness didn’t last very long as John called me after each run and told me how they did and that they were moving on to the next series. In master level tests you need to pass three series in two days. Sunday John and Gambler left again for one more series and hopes for a pass and a ribbon to bring home to me.

Gambler received his 2nd AKC Master Hunter test.

The pure joy wiped out any sadness I had. What a wonderful weekend for Gambler and John. MK decided she wanted to photobomb Gamblers picture. Guess she is wondering how she can get a pretty ribbon?

Glory was up to mischief this weekend. She was entered in a AKC Senior Hunter test. This was in hopes of her passing and receiving her Senior Hunter title before she has puppies (we still don’t know if she is pregnant or not). She really wasn’t on her game in training this past week. When she is all hormonal her brain turns to mush. I entered her because she has been doing really well in training and thought she could pull it off. She went out on the water blind and that is just what she had problems with in training. She is now done with testing for the summer unless she isn’t pregnant. If she is pregnant she is done until next year. If she isn’t pregnant back to training and will be able to compete later in the summer.

Two more weeks and we will know if Glory is pregnant or not.

Happy Memorial Day~Black And White Sunday

Sand Spring Chesapeakes would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Memorial Day. Let’s remember those who served this country and no longer with us. Let’s remember and thank those who are still with us today. Without our servicemen and women our country wouldn’t be what it is today. Thank you and I remember thee!

  • And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free, and I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me and I’ll proudly stand next to him to defend her still today, ‘cuz there ain’t no doubt I love this land, god bless the USA. -Lee Greenwood

  • Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.-John F. Kennedy

  • The dead soldier’s silence sings our national anthem. -Rev. Aaron Kilbourn

  • Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace. -Martin Luther

  • Soldier, rest! Thy warfare o’er,
Sleep the sleep that knows not breaking,
Dream of battled fields no more.
Days of danger, nights of waking. -Sir Walter Scott

When I’m Gone

– Mrs. Lyman Hancock
When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile.Forget unkind words I have spoken;
Remember some good I have done.
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I’ve had loads of fun.

Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way.
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day.

Then forget to grieve for my going,
I would not have you sad for a day,
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay,

And come in the shade of evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best.

Keeping Muscles Warm When Training In The Cold~FitDog Friday

This past Wednesday was not the “normal” warm day for this time of year. It was cloudy and 54 degrees. We started out training on land and then moved to water. By this time it was the afternoon and the temps were dropping. After the dogs ran their water marks I brought them back to the car, toweled them off and then put their furdry jackets on them to help wick the water out of their fur and keep them warm. They wore the jackets all the way home, got out of car and they were full of spunk again and wanted to play so we played.

We had a good morning of hunt test training so when we got home the gang got to have a little playtime fun.

Even the cat got into the afternoon play time. She would race in and out by the dogs. She was getting in her daily exercise routine also.

John, Gambler and Glory are headed to a AKC hunt test this weekend. I’m staying home so Gman doesn’t have to look for me. I don’t think we have done enough “not everything is free in life” training to have Gman respect me enough not to act up during a test so John is going by himself. If this is what we need to do to get 4 more passes then this is what we will do. It breaks my heart that I can’t go and watch my dogs compete as this is “our” life but I’m getting so frustrated spending money and not getting this title finished on Gman. If we can just get him through this then I can go back to running him and participating in it all as it will be just for fun.
