3rd Annual ACC WI Chessie Fun Day ~ April 28th 2018

The day started welcoming all our guest and a special welcome to the newbies to Stancerville and the fun day.

The welcome board.

T-Shirts that were pre-ordered were ready to be picked up. Earth Rated supplied poop bags and holders for our guests.

T-Shirt orders and Earth Rated poop bags with holder for our guests.

The morning started out with coffee and donuts.

New to this years fun day was the Patti Schroeder memorial card raffle. Patti passed away in Feb so she couldn’t attend the fun day in which she attended the prior two years and did a fantastic job handling the raffle tickets. She was greatly missed this year and was with us in spirit. The proceeds from the card raffle went to CRROW to help out the chessie’s that are rescued in WI.

My friend Mike makes killer Grandma Vern’s spice which he donated to the fun day. The proceeds made from the sale of the spice went to CRROW as well.

Let the games begin, the itinerary for the day.

Also new to this years fun day was the ability to test your pooch in the AKC S.T.A.R. , CGC (canine good citizen), CGCA (community canine), CGCU (canine good citizen urban) and UKC SPOT (socialized pet obedience test).

AKC S.T.A.R., CGC and UKC SPOT testing.

Thank you to Tom Pawlisch of Crawfish Chesapeakes and Polly from Canine Solutions LLC for being the testers for the day. They tested 35 dogs in the various tests.

We had a display set up recognizing the 100 year Anniversary of the American Chesapeake Club, thank you for your time and love of the breed. We also recognized Sandy at Cur-San kennels for her involvement with the chesapeakes, weather it is with breeding, mentoring or helping out the club she has her hand in it.

Congrats on 100 years ACC, and 50 years to Cur-san kennel.

Another new demonstration for the fun day was a carting demo put on by Jim Perry who also does the lure coursing and Teresa S. Teresa brought her rotties that she does carting with and took me on a ride around my driveway while Jim explained the art of carting.

Rufus the Newfie couldn’t be left out as he carts as well. Pam and Rufus gave carting rides to the children present.

During lunch or while hanging out in the shed checking out all the raffles The History of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was playing on a TV screen. It was really cool to come into the shed and seeing guest sitting down in front of the TV watching the history. It is a fantastic video sold through the American Chesapeake Club.

This year we had a pig roast along with a pot luck. The food was awesome and just love trying a little of this and a little of that.

Information on the American Chesapeake Club along with membership information and overall chesapeake information was available.

Free goods were provided by Fromm’s Family Pet Foods and Boehringer Ingelheim. If you missed my thank you to the donors you can read it here.

Free goods donated by Fromm’s and Boehringer-Ingelheim (Merial).

Land and water mock hunt tests were set up. The dogs had a great time retrieving their live and dead flyers. The puppies even had a chance to retrieve wings and small birds.

Lure coursing was a big hit again, this marked the second year Jim and his wife came and set up their course. They will continue to come until they can’t anymore.

Everyone who attended the fun day brought a dog related item for the raffle table. So many nice items you could win. This helps put on the event for the next year. I can’t thank everyone enough for bringing an item and for buying raffle tickets.

One of our guest brought an old hunt test premium and put it on display. It was interesting to see what it was like in 1986.

A old hunt test premium.

The fun day is for young and old….kids and puppies what’s not to love about getting them involved?

New friendships were made and old friends got to meet up again and hang out. We are growing each year with our attendance. In 2016 which was the first year I hosted the fun day we had 45 people, 34 dogs, 0 shirts as they weren’t offered. In 2017 we had 70 people, 23 new ones, 54 dogs and 79 shirts sold. In 2018 we had 82 people, 31 new, 69 dogs and 96 shirts sold.

We ended the day with a shed antler demo put on by Brian Schlomann. Each year he does such a nice job explaining what it is and how to get your dog to participate. Just another venue you and your dog can explore.

Thank you all for the great day. You all volunteered and made it possible for this day to be a hit. It takes a village to pull a day with this many people and dogs off and you did it! Till next year get out there and do something with your chessie!

Here is the write up that will be in the next ACC bulletin:

April 28th 2018 marked the 3rd annual ACC WI Chessie Fun Day held at the home of John & JoAnn Stancer (WI Regional Director). We couldn’t of asked for a better day. The weather cooperated  with us for the mock hunt test, lure coursing, shed antler demo and practice. New this year we offered CGC, CGCA, CGCU and SPOT testing, we had 35 chessies evaluated by Tom Pawlisch and Polly Dake-Jones. I thank them both for spending the day doing the evaluations. The event is growing each year, we had 82 people attend with 69 chessies. A great time was had by all, there was something for everyone to do. I want to thank everyone for their help in making this day a success!

Through out the year of 2016 into 2017 I contacted various dog related companies to ask if they would be willing to donate an item(s) to our Second Annual ACC WI Chessie Fun Day. I got some really great donations that made up some pretty nice baskets for the chessie peeps to win. I wanted to take time to thank all of our donors. The event was a huge success and everyone was happy with what they won.

ACC WI Chesapeake Fun Day 2016

April 23, 2016 was the first annual ACC WI Chesapeake Fun Day at the Stancerville homestead.13015374_1218294108183304_1041314100705201231_n

I became the new WI Regional Director for the American Chesapeake Club Sept. 2015. Each year the regional director needs to host either a fun day or a working dog stake to get the Chesapeakes and their families out and about and do what chessies do. This event isn’t just for the Wisconsin Chesapeake owners it is open to the surrounding states to.PicMonkey Collage3

Everyone arrived by 8 am when the festivities got underway. I took a brief moment to welcome everyone and show them where everything would be going on. 13015484_1173625692649037_811910492642126327_n

In the introductions I told all the peeps there was a table(s) set up with goodies for them and their dogs they could help themselves to and there was a table about the ACC along with membership applications for those who were not members yet. PicMonkey Collage6PicMonkey Collage5After the peeps got their morning coffee and donuts the fun was about to begin. We had donuts shipped in from a Chesapeake owner who lives in New York. I just love our Chesapeake Community how no matter how far someone is they seem to jump in and help.IMG_8936

At this years event the participants were able to have a live flyer – duck for when they did their retrieving work. We set up a triple series where the participants could decide when they got to the line if they wanted the series as a triple, double or just three singles. There was a blind station set up to for the advanced dogs that were running blinds. The participants volunteered to go out in the field and throw birds while Brian Schlomann and Jeff Nickleson stayed at the line and helped keep the test moving helping out when the participants and their dogs needed help. Land work was first and then in the afternoon we did water work. PicMonkey Collage12 PicMonkey Collage13 PicMonkey Collage14 PicMonkey Collage15While the field work was going on the other Chesapeake owners that don’t do field work hung out on the lawn and chatted with each other. The Chesapeake Retriever Rescue Of Wisconsin group was their along with a couple of their fosters getting them out and about so people could see them and hopefully find a forever home soon. Their were other rescues that pasted through the group that are now in their forever homes that showed up to hang out too.PicMonkey Collage5 PicMonkey Collage6Our live flyer- duck gunners. Dick and Pete who did a fabulous job out in the field. They are hired for next year.PicMonkey Collage7Our photographer for the day Anne Nickleson who just happened to have the oldest Chesapeake at the event, Maggie who was 13 years old and who has since passed so our condolences go out to Anne and Jeff for their loss. This wasn’t the first event she attended she has been attending for years when the previous RD hosted the event. I of course had the youngest Chesapeake’s. Guilty and Not Guilty were 12 weeks old at the time. Willow and Sophia took very good care of them during the day and they weren’t lacking any socialization or pets from the people.PicMonkey Collage4We had a pot luck lunch, Irene made the main staple of Chile and pulled Venison. Everyone else brought a dish to pass. Lunch was at noon and their was no shortage of food. The food was available all day and for dinner.PicMonkey Collage4After lunch the field group met down at the pond for some water work. PicMonkey Collage16All day long the participants could move about the 70 acre property and hang out with their dogs. People were helping out the beginners, people were walking down to the pond to let their dogs take a swim, some walked down to the creek to let them swim in the creek water. It was a fun filled relaxing day.

At 4 pm we had the raffle drawings. Each participant was to bring a dog related raffle item. Our tables were filled with some really cool items. The money that the raffles brought in is put into an account to help pay for next years event. A donation to CRROW was made for all that they did during the event this day and for all that they do with the rescues. Without them the rescue Chesapeake’s wouldn’t get the help they need or the placement they need.PicMonkey Collage2 PicMonkey Collage3After the raffle drawing Brian Schoemann talked about how to get your Chesapeake into searching and finding shed deer antlers. After his talk their was one Chesapeake Piper who gave it a try and she did really well for her first time. PicMonkey CollageIn closing I believe this event was a success! Something that will continue on in the upcoming years. Here is the first annual group photo. We had about 50 peeps and their furry family members come to the event.DSC_0275 Here is the write up I did for the ACC bulletin that came out this month.

On April 23, 2016 the first annual ACC WI Chessie Fun Day was held at Stancerville, the residence of John and JoAnn Stancer in Cambria. Patti Maye previously hosted this event each year, she resigned and passed the baton on to me. Thank you Patti for all your years as the RD. As the new ACC Regional Director, I was happy to take it and host such a great event.   We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The weather was warm and sunny, the people were beaming while the chessies were smiling. We started our day off with introductions and then the mock hunt test started for those who wanted to run their dogs. A live flyer and dead ducks were used for the test while bumpers were used for the blinds. Land ran first, the gallery watched, talked and took walks on the property. Those who didn’t run the mock hunt test hung out and talked with other chessie owners and took their dogs for a swim in the pond. A pot luck was served at noon, a raffle was a part of the fun day with many cool items up for winning. The afternoon was spent running marks on the water, more talking, petting of the dogs and hanging out. Brian Schlomann finished up the day by doing a shed antler demonstration where he talked about training to find the antlers, those who wanted to try their paw at it could. It was an overall great day with lots of relaxation and camaraderie going on.  CRROW (Chesapeake Retriever Rescue Of Wisconsin) was there along with a couple of fosters one being a Newfie. How appropriate that the breed that was part of the making of a Chesapeake was at our fun day. A donation to CRROW was made at the end of the day. This will for sure be an annual event as long as I am the Regional Director. Thanks to everyone that came and helped make this a successful event.  JoAnn Stancer ACC RD, WI

27th Annual Wisconsin Dog Fair

As the new Wisconsin Regional Director for the American Chesapeake Club I was asked along with my friend Dana if we would set up a Chesapeake booth at the fair and represent the breed. We eagerly agreed. We didn’t have much time but we managed to pull off a couple of display boards and some literature talking about the breed.

The voice of Westminster Dog Show and author of Angel On A Leash David Frei. I was lucky enough to meet David at the dog fair. My friend Amy who does therapy work with her chessie’s sent me his book after I found out he would be coming to the fair. I didn’t know I would actually get to meet him but I was prepared with my book and a pen in case I did. I’m excited to have down time now so I can get started on his book.

The dogs just loved all the attention the people were giving them at the dog fair. They couldn’t get enough pets. They were very gentle with the children and people in wheelchairs.

They also got along great with all the other breeds of dogs. They shared their space with this very nice Wirehaired Griffon.

Here is the write up I did for the upcoming ACC Bulletin.

On November 1st, 2015 the 27th Annual Wisconsin Dog Fair was being presented by the Badger Kennel Club. Dana Sunderlage and I were asked to set up a booth and represent the Chesapeakes. We printed out the breed standards, information about the breed, information about the ACC as well as had a couple of display boards with pictures of the chessie’s doing various events from hunt tests to hunting, lure coursing to dock diving, therapy work to being companions. The boards showed how versatile our breed is. It also showed how Chesapeake’s can be different colors and sizes. Dana brought Clay while I brought Glory and her daughter Preacher. They did a great job greeting the public, getting many pets, hugs and treats. The high light of the event besides giving out information about our breed was that David Frei “The voice of Westminster” and author of Angel On A Leash, America’s Therapy Dogs was there meeting the breeds and giving Best In Show Demo’s. It was a great event to have attended as the new Regional Director.

2015-DF-Flyer-Sep-30-final

This was a very well put together event by the Badger Kennel Club. Thank you for hosting this event and asking us to share our day with you. A great place to meet so many different breeds of dogs.

Stop back tomorrow on Wordless Wednesday to find out what my Canine Good Citizen Advance therapy dog did at the show to make my mouth drop.
