Sand Spring Year In Review 2023

As we end 2023 I want to reflect back on the year and share with you what we have been up too.

Starting off in January Gertie received her AKC Rally Advanced title. We did virtual videos, we needed to pass three courses.

In February Slammer and I completed his UKC Conformation Grand Show Champion with a Total dog to boot! This makes his 6th Total dog pass.

In April Slammer became a dad again to a lovely litter of pups born to Ruby. 7 more kids out there.

April 22nd was the ACC WI Chessie Fun day held at our home (Stancerville). People and their chessies came from all over the US again. It was a fun filled day. We are always thankful for the beautiful day we are given with so many wonderful friends. This couldn’t happen without everyone chipping in.

In May Slammer and John passed their first AKC Master Hunter test.

While JoAnn got to take a trip to Vegas with her friend Jodie. We had a wonderful trip, we saw so many things and places. We put on 90,000 steps while there, we got around! A special moment during the trip was when I brought my friend Susie back to Vegas to be laid to rest. She passed away 9 years ago and her last wish was for me to take her ashes to Vegas and spread them at the place where Susie took me to Vegas for my first time. It was so bitter sweet. I miss her dearly and she is pulling the one arm bandit all day long.

Another very special memory from my time in Vegas will stay with me forever as it is permanently on my arm for me to each each day. I designed a tattoo and had an artist at H & H tattoo company apply it.

The paw print is Guilty’s, the heartbeat is her actual heartbeat, the outline is her and the cattails are actual cattails that I got when I put her great grandfather Norman to sleep. Her memory lives on.

The end of June W.A.C.K.O. club hosted a Elite Shed Dog event at Stancerville. It was a three day event. Slammer and Gertie passed each day. On the second day Slammer received a 3rd place. Slammer has 65/100 and Gertie 30/100 points needed for their champion titles.

In July Slammer and John passed their second AKC Master Hunter test.

Slammer also became a dad for the fourth time. Dicca and him had a litter of 11 pups which kept Dicca’s owners on their toes.

August was a productive month. Slammer and John passed their 3rd AKC Master Hunter test.

September started out the busy month by JoAnn going Bear hunting with a friends brother and his bear hound dogs. I was successful the first morning I went out.

My friend Kim S talked me into showing Slammer in AKC conformation. I couldn’t show the first day so Kim showed Slammer, I then received a text stating that Slammer went WD/BOB for a 3 point major. To say I was surprised was an understatement. Host clubs were the Greater Racine Kennel Club and the Cudahy Kennel Club.

The second day of the show I showed Slammer and we received WD/BOB for another 3pt major. This guy was on a roll.

September was the month I had been working all year for. The ACC National Field Trial Specialty was being held in Stoughton, WI. I was one of the committee members to make this happen. It was such a great 4 days. The chair-cochair, committee members, volunteers all did an amazing job. I was happy to be apart of this event.

Right after the NFT John and Gertie headed to Saskatchewan for a week of snow goose hunting. They had a great time with their friends. Hoping this next year I can get back into going.

While John was in Canada I went to another dog show with Slammer. This show was hosted by the Sheboygan Kennel Club. He received a second and a RW.

The end of September I entered another dog show this time with Riggs. Host club was Rockford-Freeport Kennel Club. Riggs was 1st and then WD for his first 3pt major. On the second day he was 2nd/RW.

The end of October I hit a three day dog show with Slammer again. Host clubs were the Kenosha Kennel Club and Skokie Valley Kennel Club. The first day Slammer went 1st/wd/boboh for his 3rd 3pt major. The second day he went 1st/RW. The third day he went 1st/WD for his 4th 3pt major. He’s on fire!

We ended the show season of 2023 with 4 majors, 12 points and NOHS Bronze with 10 points. Unbelievable!!

October we started guiding at Lone Oak Shooting preserve again along with regular hunting. The dogs are having fun picking up birds. Gambler at 12.5 years and Glory at 12 years are still hunting and doing a great job at it. I have to scream a little louder as they are deaf but they get the job done.

Through out the year Gambler, Glory, Slammer and Gertie visited Clearview Health Campus once a week doing pet therapy. Bringing smiles to the residents.

The middle of December Slammer and I went to another Elite Shed Dog event. He timed out the first day, passed the second day and had to scratch the third day as I was called to go bobcat hunting. He now has 75/100 points to earn his champion shed dog title.

John and I both had bobcat tags, John drove me up to Sheldon, WI to hunt with the same peeps who took me bear hunting. John happened to be near the cat before I got there so he tagged it. There wasn’t another chance for me to hunt as it hadn’t snowed again before the season closed. We hunted with hound dogs and what a trip it is to witness another breed hunting.

Gambler got the privilege to hunt with his Boykin buddy Ted one last time. Gambler is 12.5 years and Ted is going on 14 years with walking disabilities. They have been hunting together a couple times during the pheasant season for the past 10 years. Gambler doesn’t play well with others but he respects Ted and it’s amazing to watch these two dogs work together to get the job done. I always have fun watching the Boykins hunt and hunting under them. Thank you Ted for many hunts with Gambler.

Bruce was able to snap this photo of Gambler and I walking side by side hunting. When Gambler’s dad Norman was 12 years old John snapped a photo of Norman and I walking side by side at Lone Oak Shooting Preserve. I now have to favorite photos of me and my pals.

Shank is Shank and has been visiting the Vet School every 3-4 months to have her cataracts evaluated. She is on daily medication and her eyes are stable. She is a fun loving little gal that doesn’t know she has a problem. Bones is her buddy as she is always stalking him and trying to play with him. He is still going strong with his megaesophagus with not having any health issues from it.

We had a uneventful Christmas and New Year.

This brings Sand Spring Chesapeakes 2023 to a close. We had a fun filled year with hoping more fun and accomplishments in 2024. We hope you all had the year you wanted and hope you have a happy, healthy and safe 2024. We will be seeing you!

“Brace” Yourself ~ Tuck And Roll

This past weekend the Sand Spring Gang and the Crawfish Gang competed at the UKC Dodge County Canine Club dog show. Crawdaddy Tom wanted to enter the brace competition that was being offered during this show so I said “why the heck not” we’re always up for a good time and laugh. We entered the brace competition earlier in the year and it was a circus act to put it mildly but it left many smiles and laughs so in the end it was a hit, plus it made us some new dog friends as the crazy chessie people flock together so we wanted to entertain the public again.

Crawdaddy Tom and the brace participates.
Talking to the judge and getting ready to show in brace.

Brace is offered at the Dodge County Canine Club UKC shows. It is a class where you have 2 like animals showing together. They need to be on the same side of the handler, when the handler shows them they should move together so it looks like one dog is moving. The judge will examine each dog and have you gait like you would if you were showing one dog in the ring. Doing this can take some expertise and grace. It shouldn’t be done when your intact male dog is living near intact females that are in heat at the time of the show unless you want some excitement at the dog show which is what we wanted this day.

Crawdaddy Tom having two left feet and beginning his descend.

All was going good until Tom decided to jog with Riggs and Josey, somehow his feet got messed up and he tripped, not sure if it was him or the dogs that tripped him up but he was going down.

It was a tuck and roll!

Tom’s foot hit the wall not his head so no one was harmed during this event. Even know we all hurd a big thug we didn’t know what all was going on.

Hey this is a G rated show!

When we come to a dog show it is a family oriented place so to speak a G rated show, during the brace class it was rated R! Riggs took advantage of the girls being in heat, himself being horny and Crawdaddy on the floor so Crawdaddy looses and takes one for the team with a head romp! Poor Josey had no idea what the hell that bastard was doing or why!

Back in action.

The president of the club came out a running, the bystanders (me and Lynne) videoed and took pictures as we weren’t letting this awesome moment go unrecorded! We were really hoping Crawdaddy Tom was ok as we were laughing secretly at him, ok it wasn’t so secret if you listen to the video.

The trick is to walk not run!

Tom learned that the trick to not falling down is to walk with the team not run.

First place performance for sure!
The club gave Tom some bandages in his winning basket for his injuries (which were none, lol)
Second show.

At the dog show there are two shows, the tuck and roll happened in show one so what would show two bring?

The exam.
Walking not running, being safe.
The team won!
The winners, in more way than one!

Show two wasn’t as eventful, we were sad we didn’t get to laugh again. We thank Crawdaddy Tom for being such a good sport and for the dogs to continue on with their mission without missing a beat. The brace class will never be the same and it will be happening again.

Go put your depends on as you will be peeing in your pants.

Your Welcome!

On The Road Again ~ 25th UKC Premier Bound

Today Gambler, Guilty and I along with the Pawlisch family Tom, Irene, Sophia, Willow, Rizzo and Glory’s Daughter Josey will be on road to the UKC Premier. This year is it’s 25th Anniversary which makes it more special for us to be attending. This is our second year in a row attending, I attended with Gambler and Glory back in 2013 when Gambler was invited to the Top Ten being the #1 Chesapeake in the Top Ten Standings. He was the #1 two years in a row (2013-2014). In 2016 Josey was #10 so she got invited to the 2017 Top Ten. Last year Guilty was #1, Josey was #3 and Gambler was #4 so they all got invited to the 2018 Top Ten (Riggs was #5 and Glory was #7 they won’t be going as I can only handle a couple dogs).

Sand Spring Conformation ~ Dodge County Canine Club

Sand Spring Conformation ~ Dodge County Canine Club

left to right: Willow and Josey, Guilty and Lynne, JoAnn and Gambler, Tom and Riggs.

On the weekend of May 12-13, 2018 the Sand Spring gang competed in the Dodge County Canine Club UKC conformation show. Three of Glory’s offspring were entered along with Gambler. Gambler and Josey are Grand Champions already, they were competing for their Total Dog recognition and Top Ten points. Riggs and Guilty are Champions already competing for their Grand Champion title.

Riggs was picked for the winner of the Champion class against Guilty in one of the two shows on Saturday. Riggs and Josey also competed in the Brace class at the end of the breed showing. Brace is where you have two like dogs showing at the same time by one person. They need to move the same and look the same while showing. Riggs and Josey won the brace class in show 2.

Gambler was picked for winner of the Grand Champion class over Josey in show 2, he then went Best of Breed which made him eligible for his Total Dog recognition. This is the picture after the first day of Conformation and Rally Obedience.

Guilty was picked for the winner of the Champion class against Riggs in show 2, she was also awarded two reserves on Saturday.

On Sunday she was picked for the winner in the Champion class for each show over Riggs. The first show step sister Josey was picked for the Best of Breed and Guilty received reserve. Show two Guilty was picked Best of Breed over Josey. This picture is after Sunday’s dog show.

Riggs has other things on his mind.

We won the Brace class in show 2 on Saturday.

Brace class was the highlight of Saturdays shows. Tom tried to show Riggs and Josey together but Riggs thought he needed to breed Josey during the class and wasn’t listening to Tom. I decided to take on the task and pulled it off. The judges were great and the spectators were having a great time watching. In show two the judge asked me to go around the ring again, she was smiling away and Tom asked her if she had me going around again just for fun and the judge nodded and smiled bigger. It was so much fun, I will admit we never practiced, it was a spur of the moment thing and I had no idea what I was doing but it was fun and that is all that mattered and we pulled off a win and a very cool basket donated by the club.

A great weekend was had by all!

Josey Working Her Way To Her UKC UROC And URX

URO3 UAGI USJ CA GRCH RATN Sand Spring Outlaw SPOT-ON CGCA CGCU RN THDN TKI RATN

Josey (Glory and Thunder 2015 pup) is working her way to her UKC UROC and URX titles. She already has her URO3 title which is the highest level of Rally Obedience in UKC. Once you have this title if you want to still compete in Rally Obedience you can receive qualifying passes and scores that earn you points towards your UROC and URX titles. With these titles you are on your way to being able to become a Rally Obedience judge which Tom is working towards as well.

May 12-13, 2018 Josey competed in Rally Obedience 2 and 3 at the Dodge County Canine Club spring show. This is how she did: 8 Rally passes working towards UROC and URX, 2 best of breed and Total Dog. What a great weekend. Josey is now a 7x Total Dog! ~Tom

Josey was entered in conformation as well that weekend. Willow showed her in the ring. For this show and our coming show at the UKC Premier I bought a couple Interchangable armband number holders from Petsessories by Amy Cox for Willow and Sophia. Willow I got purple and Sophia I got light blue.

Interchangeable armband number holders.

The ribbons are interchangeable.

Adjustable armband.

The armband without the ribbon cover. You can replace the ribbons to your fancy.

Willow wearing the armband.

The armband has a easy to use alligator snap that will hold several numbers at once.

Willow and Josey won 2 Best of Breeds during the show weekend. She does such a good job with Josey, they show really well together. I myself had a Petsessories Interchangeable armband number holder as well and I would put 4 numbers in the alligator clip, it was really easy to flip between numbers so I had the one on top that I needed at that time. I was able to switch out the ribbon and match it to what I was wearing. The armband stayed up on my arm and was very comfortable. I’m glad I found these on Etsy as they are a keeper to be used over and over for many years. If I want to change out the colors or add jewels I can go online and order up some new covers. There are different styles to choose from. Once you place your order Amy contacts you in a reasonable time to make sure everything is right before she gets your order together. I received the armbands in a great turnaround. These are so much more stylish than the normal rubberbands that most use. I’m happy with my purchase.

Congrats to Josey, Tom and Willow for a great weekend at the show!

UKC ~ Total Dog

UKC ~ Total Dog

Honor To Whom Honor Is Due

UKC has supported the Total Dog philosophy through its events and programs for over a century. Essentially, the UKC world of dogs is a working world. That’s the way it was developed in 1898, and that’s the way it remains today. A Total Dog displays equal parts Function, Temperament, and Structure. Total Dog is a way to showcase dogs who look and perform equally well. The UKC Total Dog philosophy places an emphasis on dogs who shine in multiple venues, such as displaying the gait appropriate for their breed type while in the show ring, and then using that superb construction to effortlessly run full speed in a Lure Coursing race. A sound, well-bred, well-adjusted dog can easily transition from the show ring to a performance event. They have the looks to excel as a proper specimen of their breed, while also having the brains and ability to perform athletically in a variety of sporting events.

The two largest, annual Total Dog competitions are held at Premier and Gateway Nationals. To become a Total Dog Qualifier at these shows, a dog must place in a conformation event one day, and then place in a performance event the following day. Those qualifiers are then invited into the Total Dog ring to compete for Total Dog Best In Show. Premier and Gateway also offer Altered Total Dog Best in Show. ~UKC

This past weekend was the Dodge County Canine Club UKC dog show. During this show they offer the Total Dog program. When you fill out your conformation entry fee you mark if you are entering the Total Dog program, which is you will enter an performance event and qualify with a pass in that event and you will enter conformation and receive an Best of Breed in the show ring. When you accomplish these two tasks during the show weekend you will be awarded the Total Dog recognition.

In our group of friends that entered the dog show this past weekend Diggs the GSP along with Lynne, Josey along with Tom and Gambler along with I were entered into the Rally Obedience competition and the Conformation show. All three of us received our Total Dog recognition the first day of the show weekend.

This is Diggs first Total Dog, Josey’s seventh and Gamblers third.

A great weekend was had by all. We are glad that the UKC offers this program, it is a way to show how versatile our dogs are. They have the looks, brains and body too!

Junior Handlers Sophia And Willow

When we were at the Central Wisconsin Kennel Club UKC conformation show held September 9-10, 2017 in Amherst, WI Tom and Irene signed their two girls Sophia and Willow up to be junior handlers for each show which happened to be two shows each day.

When we go to competitions you can bet some props will be pulled out and some fun being had.

Saturday’s fun:

Captain Poopie Pants.

The poop hat was brought out for some laughs. The girls are such good sports and go along with anything that they encounter (adults being crazy).

Willow and Glory.

This club’s order of showing was different than other clubs we have been at, usually the junior handlers compete first followed by puppies and then the regular group classes. Puppies were first then it was the junior handlers. There wasn’t a ring steward or line up list so it was a bit confusing to know when you were suppose to be in the ring. The judge called the numbers out for the ones that were suppose to be showing in the ring. Willow who was showing Glory was in Novice Junior Handler (8-13 yrs) so she entered the ring first along with a gal that was showing a Aussie. After they showed it was now Sophia’s turn with Guilty in Novice Senior Junior Handler (13-18 yrs) class. The judge called one girl into the ring and started watching her handle her dog while Sophia stood by the entrance to the ring awaiting her turn. We were wondering why Sophia wasn’t called into the ring but there was no ring steward to ask. After the judge was done judging the other girl and when she came back to the table Tom asked her when Sophia was going into the ring. The judge looked in her book and said she wasn’t entered, when in fact she was entered. After searching it was found out that her name and number was listed in small print above a line which was hard to see. Since the judge already judged the class she couldn’t judge Sophia. The look on Sophia’s face was heartbreaking to her parents and to Sophia herself. This was her first dog show and she was super excited to do something new. Usually when we are at dog shows the adults show and the kids hang out and be our pit crew so this time it was their time to have some fun and have us be the pit crew. The judge was very apologetic and felt bad that the error occurred but  it was out of her hands. It was now up to us to make sure she wasn’t missed for the second show.

Sophia and Guilty.

The second show was a new judge and again no ring steward. The one gal got called into the ring with her St. Bernard then it was time for Sophia to get called in and we waited and waited and nothing happened so Tom spoke up and the judge finally saw her name and called her in. She got to take Guilty around the ring and she did a great job!

The girls and their ribbons.

Sophia received a  second place in the second show. Willow received a first, second and a reserve winner in one of the shows. They were happy, I was so proud to see the girls handling my girls in the ring. They did an excellent job with only one day of practice with my dogs.

Just hanging.

Sunday’s fun:

The baby head made an appearance.

For Sunday’s show the baby head made an appearance, there were some American Flags, hats and craw-fish hats that came along too. The best hat was the Mexican cheese hat that Irene got at a gas station along the way.

Group photo.

Don’t we look like a fun group of people to be around? One thing that happened at this show which I couldn’t believe happened was that when Willow was wearing her crab hat she got told by an adult that she shouldn’t be wearing that as it could scare the dogs! Willow was crush as she had no idea nor did we that she would get told that. She was about having fun and her fun got shot down. The dogs at the dog shows should be taught proper socialization but I guess there are some show dogs that the owners don’t ever let them leave their crates in fear that their fur will get damaged or messed up so those dogs aren’t used to the surrounding things. That’s those peoples problem not ours and it shouldn’t infringe on our fun. This world would be a better place if people would just relax and have fun.

Willow and Glory.

Sophia and Riggs.

The second day of showing wasn’t any more organized then the first day. There was a list telling the order of the show but there was still no ring steward and a different junior handler got missed this day. Willow showed Glory again they are in-sync with each other now and Sophia showed Riggs. Riggs was a handful and had a bee in his bonnet this day, thinking it was because the hurry up and wait on getting into the ring and he was just plain bored and of course a young dog so he wanted to do something instead of just wait.

When you are a junior handler the judge asks you questions about the breed of dog you are showing so Willow and Sophia had to be up on the traits of the Chesapeake. They also were asked where different body parts were on the dogs. The girls were also asked this weekend to show other breeds in the regular classes. They showed Toy Fox Terriers and American Bulldog. They got different handling of dog techniques this weekend.

The judge asked Willow where the Chesapeake originated, she answered America, the judge said “your wrong it originated in Canada”. Will gave her a strange look and said “I don’t think so” and then the judge said “oh yea your right, I’m getting my dogs confused”. It was a laugh for the day!

Sophia received a first and second for showing Riggs while Willow received a first and a reserve again for showing Glory.

Despite the disorganized show and ring disappointment it turned out to be a great weekend. You have to look past the small stuff and focus on the big picture, we all learned something during this show and hanging out with friends was the best part.

Just wear a Mexican cheese hat and keep calm.

2016 A Year In Review

2016 year in review

The year started out great with Glory expecting her second litter via a surgical AI using frozen semen. She delivered her litter of 9 via c-section on February 6, 2016. The staff at Veterinary Village in Lomira did such an amazing job at bringing these little one into our lives and making sure momma Glory was taken care of properly during her surgical procedure so she could raise her litter. What made this day special was that I had my friends Tom and Irene right there with me to witness and help out in the miracle of birth. Momma and her little ones went home where we spent the next 8 weeks raising them to their fullest potential until they went off to their new homes. We gained a new family member when we kept Guilty from the litter.

In March and then again in April Gambler became a father for the first and second time. His first litter had 2 boys and then his second litter had 8. My friend kept a female out of this breeding with his female Choptank so we went up to the UP to visit the litter before they went to their new homes. It’s been great watching a few of the puppies grow up. The one male Buck that we get to follow is a spitting image and personality of Gambler. Some online friendships have been made because of these breedings.

Gambler also tried his paw at Barn Hunt, he received his Rat Instinct title which means he could pick a rat out of an enclosed tube. We didn’t go any further with more barn hunt titles as it was getting into hunt test training time and that is more important.  It was something fun to do when nothing else is going on.

As the new Regional Director for the American Chesapeake Club for WI I hosted my first Chessie Fun Day, it was held the end of April and about 50 peeps and their brown dogs came. It was a fun day of mock hunt test training, basic puppy training, raffles, lunch and hanging out. This will be an annual event.

In May it was time for Not Guilty to make her journey across the pond to live in the UK. My friend Jacky flew over from England to pick her up and travel back with her. While Jacky was here she met up with some facebook friends and saw an American Hunt Test. She spent the weekend with us in Manitowac, WI where Gambler was entered into a AKC Master hunter hunt test. She got to see how the dogs ran the hunt test game here in the states. The best part of this weekend was having Gambler pass the test and receiving his Master Hunter title. John did a fabulous job handling him to his title. Jacky also visited with our hunt test group along with eating lots of food. It was a short but sweet visit and away Jacky and Summer went back across the pond.

May was also a big month for Preacher as she along with her sister Josey whom lives with the Pawlisch’s were running the UKC show circuit as The Eastwood Sisters, they competed against each other and in the end both girls received their UKC conformation titles along with their SPOT titles which is Socialized Pet Obedience Test.

The beginning of June I took a trip without my dogs to meet my chessie friends in Maryland, I met friends I met before and met new online friends. When your meeting and hanging out with chessie and lab friends a good time is had by all and great memories are made. I got to hang out with such great friends that took me to many different places. Great food, great drinks, great dogs, great sites and beautiful friends.

The end of June Gambler was entered into a UKC HRC Finished Hunt Test, John again handled him to his title. He is now known as: HRCH USJ U-GRCH Sand Spring Ev’ry Paw’s A Winner MH CGCA THDN TT. Quite the accomplishment for my 5 year old. He amazes me with his talent and to think he was owner bred, trained and half handled by me and the other half handled by John. The summer training with Gambler wasn’t stressful this year as it was basically just for fun and to stay in shape for the hunting season.

In August we entered Guilty and Preacher in a few UKC HRC Started tests, Preacher rocked the HRC Started tests by going 4 for 4 receiving her title. She is now known as: HR U-CH Sand Spring Pale Rider SPOT. Guilty was a mere 6 months old with not enough training to pull off any passes. We sure had fun training her and watching her antics. Momma Glory also competed in some UKC HRC Finished tests. She passed 3 out of 4 tests towards her title.

By the time hunt tests were coming to a close fall was knocking on our door and a whole new set of adventures were on their way.  The American Chesapeake Field Trial Specialty was being held in Ronan, MT the middle of September. Jacky from England flew back over and rode with us across the US to attend the FTS. Gambler was entered in 3 events, the open, the amateur and the qualifying.  He ran three series of the open which was way more than I thought he would run. I was so pleased at his performance, for not ever running and only training for a few weeks he made me proud. Field trials aren’t for the faint of heart dog or people. He didn’t come home with any placements but came home with the knowledge that this is a possibility for next summer’s training. Guilty was entered in the junior puppy stake at 7 months of age she ended up in third place. She and John make a good team. Maybe some field trials in her future?

From Ronan Jacky flew back to England while John and I drove across and up to Saskatchewan, Canada to spend a week with our hunting buddies snow goose hunting. John and I took Gambler, Glory and Guilty. Our friend Mike took his Sand Spring pup Pearl who is now 9 years old and Preacher. The Sand Spring gang had a great time retrieving birds. We had good weather and birds. Our total of birds at the end of the week was 179 birds between 6 hunters. We had a scare with one of our hunting buddies as he had a heart attack while out in the field but made it to the hospital in time and got fixed up.

After we got home from Saskatchewan the hunting season in WI was in full bore. The dogs got to go out pheasant, dove and goose hunting. There hunt test training was set aside for real hunting which they enjoy because there are less rules when hunting with JoAnn. Nellie at 12 years old got to go out pheasant hunting as well and got herself a pheasant. Gambler and Glory also got invited a few times to go on guided pheasant hunts for a pheasant farm. John and I also went once with them and the group invited us back in Jan because they enjoyed hunting with our dogs so much and were in awe at their hunting ability.

November and December Guilty and I hit the UKC conformation shows. Sadly Guilty was the youngest in the show ring against the other chessies so she didn’t win any shows. We got practice which we needed and we got our 100 points needed for her show title. We just need 3 competition wins yet. The judge said she was a nice puppy just needed to fill out so I’m good with that. We will be back at it in 2017.

The last big highlight of 2016 was that I got asked to do therapy work with my dogs again. I took a year off because the school didn’t want the program anymore, I really missed it so was happy to hear a new school wanted us to come in and spend time with the kids. Gambler jumped back in like he never missed a day and the kids all loved dressing him up in costumes and petting him. Glory went in once with me and she showed me that therapy work isn’t her thing so I think I will be retiring her. That makes room for me to get Guilty and Preacher ready and have them do it instead. Some dogs are cut out for therapy work and some aren’t. They all can’t be good at everything at least not my dogs.

As I close out 2016 I want to thank each and every one of you that followed along with my adventures, my ups, my downs, my smiles and my tears. You all rock! Come along with me and see what 2017 will bring for the Sand Spring crew.

Preacher won her class which was owner breeder handler in two shows and won best female along with best of breed in one show. For the weekend she received one competition win and 35 points.

In UKC you need to gather over 100 points and have 3 competition wins with three different judges in order to receive your UKC conformation title. Below is a outline of how you get your points.

G&G Accomplishments For The Year So Far

Miss Glory’s Accomplishments

DSC_0483

This has been quite a year for Miss Glory and I. I should say our year started last August 2012 when I finished Glory to her UKC conformation title adding UCH to the beginning of her name. In January Glory and I did something we have never done before. We entered a AKC conformation event, we or more so I had a blast. Glory took Winners Bitch and Best Of Opposite. She continued to do well in March where she took Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite 2 days in a row. We attended a 3 day show in May where Glory took Reserve Winners with 4 other dogs in the ring. This was a big deal to me as this was only the seventh time in a AKC ring. She also took third on the last day. Not to bad for a couple of newbies.  She has a total of 3 points out of the 15 she needs for her conformation title. Then in 2013 we were invited to the UKC Premier where she had a special invite to participate in the Top Ten as she was the #6 Chesapeake in t he Top Ten Breed And Dog Standings for 2012. Glory recieved the Award Of Excellence for the Top Ten Show. She went on to receive 2 reserve champion ribbons. She learned how to Dock Jump, starting out at 6.8 feet and ending with her best jump at 12.2 feet. This summer we worked on her UKC SHR Started title, she received 3 out of 4 passes. We ran out of HRC events so we are unable to finish her title this year. She continued to do well with passing 3 more AKC Junior Hunter tests recieving her JH title on August 25th at Manitowoc Kennel Club adding JH to the end of her name. John handled her to her first JH pass and I handled her to her last 3 passes along with the title pass. She has been trained by John and I. She is now getting ready to start the fall hunting season. Early goose is first, then a trip to Sasketchewan for some snow goose hunting then coming home to the WI waterfowl and upland season. Along with starting the hunting season she is entered in the upcoming AKC conformation shows, so her event’s for the year still arn’t finished. Glory you have been such a joy to train, you really have your own personality that makes me smile. I am so happy with your success and hope you have more success in the near future.

Gambler’s Accomplishments

DSC_0474

WOW, what a year so far we have had with “Gambler”. We have had a year of first’s. I should say our year started last August 2012 when I finished Gambler to his UKC conformation title adding UCH to the beginning of his name. Then in September I ran my first AKC Senior Hunter test ever and we ended up with a pass and his first leg out of four towards his title. Then in 2013 we were invited to the UKC Premier where he had a special invite to participate in the Top Ten as he was the #1 Chesapeake in the Top Ten Breed And Dog Standings for 2012. We went to the UKC Premier where he learned how to Lure Course where he passed two runs, one shy for his LC title. He learned how to Dock Jump where he started out jumping 3 feet then ended at 18.3 feet and received his United Senior Jumper title, adding USJ to the beginning of his name. He went 3 out of 5 BOB in the conformation ring where he received 3 legs out of 5 towards his Grand Champion title.  While at the Premier Gambler also participated in the Total Dog program. It is for dogs that have gotten a show champion and a performance title. As well as participating he qualified for Total dog proving that he is a versatile dog. The United Retriever Specialty also offered a Total Retriever where again he needed to have a show title and a performance title. He got a ribbon for his accomplishment in both venues. This  summer we worked on his UKC HRC Seasoned title, he received his HR title on August 4th at Muddy Waters Club adding HR to the beginning of his name. He continued to do well with passing 2 more AKC Senior Hunter tests receiving his SH title on August 25th at Manitowoc Kennel Club adding SH to the end of his name. I unfortuantly didn’t handle him to his UKC or AKC titles. John handled him while I continued to do all his hunt test training. He is now getting ready to start the fall hunting season. Early goose is first, then a trip to Sasketchewan for some snow goose hunting then coming home to the WI waterfowl and upland season. This should be a great year as he has really come along. Thanks Gambler for being who you are. To say I am very proud is a understatement.
