Tasty Doggie Treats for Christmas

This weekend my friend Kathy with her pooches Kuri and Monet came over to help me make Tasty Doggie Treats for Christmas so I could give them away to my friends who have pooches at Christmas. Kathy has made treats in the past and has given my gang some which they LOVED so I wanted to make some for my friend’s pooches. She brought the doggie treat cookbook, her big mixer, bone shaped cookie cutters, cookie cooling racks and laughter (I had the ingredients).

The pooches got to run around outside and play before we got started so they weren’t underfoot while we were baking.

Doggie treat recipes

Tomutto & Cheese

2 C. whole wheat flour

3 tablespoons parmesan

1 tablespoon oregano

½ C. tomato paste

½ C. water

2 tablespoons olive oil

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine tomato paste, water and olive oil. Stir in parmesan and oregano. Stir until well blended. Gradually add flour. Knead until smooth. Roll dough to ¼ inch thick and cut with cookie cutter. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Makes 1 dozen.

Dig N’ Cheese

½ C. shredded cheese

2 tablespoons softened margarine

1 ½ C. whole wheat flour

½ C. milk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream together cheese and margarine. Add milk and flour. Mold mixture into ball and roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut dough with cookie cutter and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until edges start to brown. Makes 1 ½ dozen.

Smaller Collar Diet Bone

2 beef bouillon cubes

1 C. warm water

¼ C. skim milk

1 tablespoon margarine

½ C. shredded reduced fat cheddar cheese

3 ½ C. whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Dissolve bouillon cubes in warm water. Mix shredded cheddar cheese with flour. Add skim milk, margarine, and beef broth. Knead dough until firm, and roll to ¼ inch thickness. Stamp out with cookie cutter and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Makes 2 ½ dozen.

Peanut Butter

¼ C. peanut butter

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 C. water

2 ¼ C. whole wheat flour

1 C. oatmeal

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl combine peanut butter, oil, and water. Gradually add flour, then oatmeal. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness and cut with cookie cutter. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes. Makes 2 ½ dozen.

Howl Wheat

4 C. whole wheat flour

½ C.  wheat germ

¼ C. oatmeal

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 ½ C. water

2 tablespoons chopped parsley or ½ tablespoon dried parsley

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine flour, wheat germ, oatmeal and parsley. Add water and oil to dry ingredients. Knead for 2-3 minutes. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness and cut with cookie cutter. Bake at 375 degrees on an ungreased cookie sheet for 30 minutes or until edges start to brown. Makes 2 ½ dozen.

Cinnabone

2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons molasses

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

½ C. mile

½ teaspoon cinnamon

1 ½ C. whole wheat flour

½ C. wheat germ

½ C. brewers yeast*

*Can be found in health food stores

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl mix together honey, molasses, oil, mile and cinnamon. Gradually add flour, yeast, and wheat germ. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness and cut into bone shapes. Bake at 350 degrees on an ungreased cookie sheet for 20 minutes or until bottoms are brown. Makes 1 ½ dozen.

Bark-B-Q

2 C. whole wheat flour

½ C. oatmeal

¼ C. wheat germ

½ C. tomato paste

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

¾ C. water

1 tablespoon honey

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, mix oil, water, honey and tomato paste. Add to dry ingredients. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness, cut with cookie cutter, and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 2 ½ dozen.
