Snow Snack

Snow is nummy.

Mom you have some on your face, let me get that! – Glory that is just my sugar it’s not snow!

There is something about snow that Nellie loves. When ever we are out side she is gobbling up the snow. At first when she did it a few years back I thought maybe she had a kidney problem or another disease that she needed water so she was eating snow to make up for it. I took her in and had bloodwork done and she was normal. No diseases to be had she just loves eating snow that much.

She makes a cute snow face doesn’t she? Do your dogs gobble up the snow too?

Bales And Banks~FitDog Friday

This last week the SS gang got to take a walk  run to the creek for some jolly ball fun. Glory is in the stage where she has to carry something around no matter how far away we go from home. She really wanted to haul her favorite piece of firewood but I made her leave that at home so she grabbed the jolly ball. Once we were at the creek Gambler took over possession of the ball and we did some exercise drills.

Gambler going up and down the creek banks with the jolly ball.

Look at me up here!

Awe shucks, can we do some more?

Once back at home Gambler did some snow bank drills.

A fun day was had by all!

How To Stay Fit In Cold Temps~Fitdog Friday

How To Stay Fit In Cold Temps you ask the SS gang? They stay fit by playing with their outside toys when there is snow on the ground and it’s cold outside. When it is cold they don’t think about how cold it is because they are running around playing, chasing, retrieving but most of all playing keep away from the one who doesn’t have the toy. In cold conditions you need to do short periods of play and have them come in to warm up. If it was up to the SS gang they would stay out for as long as they can. You do need to be careful of slippery area’s when playing in the cold and snow.

Here are the pictures of the SS gang’s fun in the snow.

Nellie just loves the puller toy, she will play by herself with it. She will run around with it, she will flip it up and shake it, she will play footsie with it all burning calories as she plays.

Gambler wanted to play with the jolly ball and would race around to keep it away from the girls. Glory did manage to get the other jolly ball so she could have some fun too.

FitDog Friday~Wet Wubba’s In The Snow & A Hay Bale

This week the gang finally got to get their Kong wet wubba’s out of storage and play with them again. We haven’t been doing much hunting nor exercising since deer hunting so I had this clever idea that we should play with the wubba’s and add a hay bale to the mix to add some strength and balance to their exercise regimen. Gambler and Glory were super excited, we have to walk a hundred yards to the marsh where the hay bale was and both were jumping up and down trying to grab the wubba’s that I had to hold above my head. Nellie was busy doing what she does best and was eating on a deer leg. She later brought her leg down to the marsh and joined us for some wubba fun.

Here are the pictures from our exercise/play session.

Wubba fun.

Let’s add in a hay bale.

More wubba running and playing.

Up on the hay bale, down off the hay bale.

More hay bale action.

Nellie joining in the fun.

This Moment~See Beautiful

This winter has been a long cold one in Wisconsin. It’s been so cold I haven’t spent much time outside. I am a hermit when it comes to cold weather and I found out last Sunday on my walk around my property that I have been missing out on some real See Beautiful moments.

The real beauty I saw was in my furkids. Nellie, Gambler and Glory. In the outdoors with the natural sunlight and the beautiful surrounding of my property the real beauty of them was seen.

The pine trees in the background are trees that I planted back in 1998 when we bought the property. They have really grown into beautiful trees that make beautiful background for my pictures.

The marsh and pond have a different look to it in the winter. A This Moment~See Beautiful look. I stood back in awe and just smiled at what I have produced all stemming from my foundation stud Norman, he gave me Nellie and Gambler and Nellie gave me Glory. Three souls that will be beautiful to me each moment of each day. I leave you with my favorite dog poem. This pretty much sums up my feelings on my furkids.

Just A Dog

From time to time people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “That’s a lot of money for just a dog,” They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for “Just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “Just a dog.” Many hours have passed with my only company being “Just a dog,” and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought  about  by  “Just a dog.” In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “Just a dog” provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day.

If you, too, think its “Just a dog,” you will probably understand phrases like “Just a friend,” “Just a sunrise,” or “Just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “Just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

For me and folks like me, it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday people can understand it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “Just a man or woman.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “Just a dog,” smile, because they “Just Don’t Understand.”

FitDog Friday~Neck Strengthening Tools

This past Sunday the SS gang went on a walk/run around our property. We finally didn’t have freezing temps and the weather was somewhat nice, the snow is melting so I thought I better get out and get some snow pictures before it is all gone. After our walk I decided we came across three neck strengthening tools that I wasn’t even aware of.

The first neck strengthening tool is a ball. It really has a dual purpose, Gambler carries it the whole time we are out and about so he is strengthening his neck muscles when carrying it and when he puts it down and picks it up again more strengthening. It also promotes the game of chase as the other dogs want the ball too so he runs away with his ball and they chase after him to try and get the ball for him. All in all exercise for them all.

The second tool is sticks, the gang found tree limbs laying around so they thought they should pick them up and carry them around. If one dog picked one up the other dog thought they should have that stick too so then it was a game of tug o war with the stick working on not only strengthening the neck muscles but the whole upper body.

The third tool is firewood, on our way back to the house Glory just happened upon a piece of firewood that she carried from the deck to the pasture so now she found it again and decided she needed to carry it back to the house getting in some strengthening exercise as she goes.

So you can find stuff out in the environment to help out with your exercise program.

FitDog Friday~Snowbank

We got more snow on Monday night and more snow to come today. We got maybe around 5 inches of powdery white stuff. The Sand Spring gang thought it was time to get some exercise out in the soft snow. Wednesday’s exercise was going up and over snow banks.  I would toss a ball or a stuffed animal over the snow bank and the gang would either run up and over the bank or jump over the bank. They would do whatever they could do to beat the other ones to the object. Here are our snowbank photos.

Three Chesapeake Relay

When we are out and about just messing around the gang ends up doing the three Chesapeake relay. What is the three Chesapeake relay you ask, well it is when there are no rules, no training technique going on and the dogs can do what they want when I throw a bumper or two or in this case three.

Gman, Nellie and Glory all have a bumper.

Gman, Nellie and Glory all have a bumper.

Glory says "I got my bumper".

Glory says “I got my bumper”.

And the relay starts.

And the relay starts.

Nellie goes in for the hand off.

Nellie goes in for the hand off.

Glory hands it off.

Glory hands it off.

Nellie decides she is done with this game.

Nellie decides she is done with this game.

Glory goes for the bumper.

Glory goes for the bumper.

Gman is hot on her tail.

Gman is hot on her tail.

Gman's going for the bumper.

Gman’s going for the bumper.

Under Glory he goes.

Under Glory he goes.

na na I got it.

na na I got it.

I still have mine.

I still have mine.

I see one here.

I see one here.

Come get mine, I dare you!

Come get mine, I dare you!

The collision.

The collision.

And the turn around.

And the turn around.

If I don't get a bumper I will make a crazy face.

If I don’t get a bumper I will make a crazy face.

What usually happens is Nellie will steal the bumpers and run off with them and make her own pile, Gambler will get to them the fastest so he swipes them all first and poor Glory just gives them up and she isn’t a fighter.
