When he did get to taste test it you didn’t have to tell him twice, he snatched it up quickly, being a hunter of turkey and duck he could smell the goodness right away. He did have to chew it a bit as it was a thick jerky like treat before he gobbled it right down. The bars were scored so you could give just one part of the bar or the whole bar.

Set Up And Test Dog~FitDog Friday

When you train for hunt test competitions you need to set up your training tests. You need to set up holding blinds (for throwers or remote launchers to hide behind), need to set up blinds (stations set up with just birds to practice handling skills yours and your dogs for blind retrieves) and set up decoys out in the field to distract the dog running. There are many different things you can use to set up a training test and many different ways to set up a training test. Since Nellie is retired from competitions but still hunts she doesn’t get to train with us on a regular basis since my car only holds two dogs so when we are at home training she gets to be the set up dog as well as the test dog because everyone needs a test dog to run first and make sure there are no “bugs” with the test you set up for the other dogs running. If there are now is the time to change the set up.

This day we were setting up blinds at the pond so Nellie got to walk along with carrying her bumper after she retrieved it from me throwing it.

Ok mom throw the bumper already! I will throw the bumper in the pond to give Nellie some swimming exercise which is great exercise for a older dog with joint issues.

She still likes to fly into the water.

Blazing a trail through the pee soup.

Nellie you need to leave the bumper there for the other dogs.

After we set up the blinds at the pond we set up a test in the marsh and Nellie got to be test dog for the live flyer we were shooting during this training test.

Here I go, here I go.

I got it.

Since Nellie is 10.5 years old we don’t want her to have to do difficult tests but she still needs to get out there and get some exercise and why not be set up and tests dog because there has to be one and she fits the job perfectly.

It’s A Ducky Monday~Monday Mischief

With a couple weeks of not knowing if Monday Mischief was going to be here or not I am so glad that it is here! Thanks to Jen at mybrownnewfies for keeping it going! Lord knows we always have mischief at our house to report on Monday to start the week out with a bang.

Today’s mischief involves little duckies. Each year I buy day old mallard ducks or I incubate them from eggs that are laid by the adult mallards I’ve kept through the winter. This year I didn’t keep any mallards through the winter so I had to buy day old ducks. Usually I buy them in March/April when it is warmer as I don’t want the little buggers to freeze if shipped in the mail. This year I wanted to buy them as early as I could so they could be big enough to start using them for training come June. So I placed my order for first hatch on February 23rd. I went and picked them up from Abendroth’s Hatchery just after they were hatched, brought them home and set them up in our shed. It just so happened this night it was going to get well below zero and not much warmer the next day so I had to keep the litter buggers warm.

101 little peepers.

Have to keep the peepers warm.

So how does JoAnn keep the peepers warm you ask?

Besides having three heat lamps they have their own space heater.

And a sheet to keep the heat in.

Can’t accuse me of not taking very good care of my little peepers, they have a warmer set up then I have, lol.

All the little peepers have made it two weeks now. They are such hardy little things. They are growing like weeks and making a mess of things. G & G are happy as they know when little peepers come training is just around the corner.

Blinds With Decoys And Hay Bales

Gambler and Glory’s downfall at hunt tests have been blinds. So we have been trying to run more blinds to have them become better at them. Gamblers downfall with blinds is that the mark is thrown one way and the blind is run under the arc of the mark so there is so much scent out there on the way to the blind. He gets hung up in the scent and will hunt on his own by the thrown bird station and then will ignore the handler. So we set up blinds with ducks sitting in a pen behind a hay bale on the way out to the blind, we also put out decoys on each side of the blind line to have distractions out there. This is more advance training then Glory will see in her Senior level test but one day she will be running these blinds so why not start training now?

Almost there.

Got it!

Heading back.

Here I am!

Gambler taking off.

Full steam ahead.

Got to the blind in record time.

Heading back.

Lining up to go again.

We continue to train as much as we can. We are getting ready for a up coming test with Glory this coming weekend. She will be running in a AKC Senior test. Gambler has off until the following weekend where he will be running in a UKC Finished test.

FitDog Friday~Training

This week was hunt test training training training. Since Gambler didn’t fair to well with last weekends hunt test we have been busy training him for his hunt test tomorrow. This means that Glory gets trained too. She doesn’t get to compete yet since she is just getting over her heat cycle and you can’t run in a hunt test if you are in heat so she gets to just train. We trained in our hay field that is quite tall so they got their exercise pushing through the cover.

Here are some of the pictures I took.

FitDog Friday~Attended A Training Seminar

This weeks FitDog exercise was attending a Bill Hillman retriever seminar and a couple of miscellaneous exercises. We were able to get our dog out that needed help and work it. I brought Glory and Gambler with me. Glory got to get out in front of the crowd and was helped with learning “swim by”. Gambler got out to just play. Saturday night Gambler got a Birthday duck so these are the pictures from then.

After the seminar we had a little water training session at our house on Sunday. Our new friend’s from 2browndawgs came and trained with us. Only Gambler got to train as the storm came up and cut our training session short. We still got some good exercise in this weekend.

Monday Mischief~Escaped Duck

This weeks mischief was that the door of our duck pen was open and a couple of ducks got out. Pen raised ducks usually stick around the pen as their friends are in the pen so they don’t go to far. When I went to feed the ducks with the dogs I saw the door was open, I then saw a drake and a hen mallard hanging out behind the pen. Gambler saw them too as he was off and running and caught the hen mallard. He brought it back to me to stick back in the pen. The drake flew off. The next couple of days after that the drake mallard was spotted on our pond then it would come back and hang out by the pen.

Here’s where the mischief begins. John goes out with the dogs, he spots the drake mallard comes in and tells me to go around the duck pen and push the duck to him so Glory and him could do a little hunt.

Off we go to get a duck.

Off we go to get a duck.

Really! Do we get to finally get a pen duck?

Really! Do we get to finally get a pen duck?

Get'en ready.

Get’en ready.

Hello Mr. Drake.

Hello Mr. Drake.

uh ho I feel something is a little off, I bet get out of here.

uh ho I feel something is a little off, I bet get out of here.

I got it!

I got it!

That's mine!

That’s mine!

Happy girl.

Happy girl.

What shall I do now?

What shall I do now?

You shall pose with your pretty duck.

You shall pose with your pretty duck.

Have to pay attention from now on and keep that duck pen door closed. Can’t be letting those $15.00 ducks get away. Glory was the chosen one for this mischief fun.

On another note head on over to SlimKitty to check out SlimDoggy’s sister site SlimKitty that was newly launched last month.
