This past weekend I took Slammer and Gertie to a AKC Temperament Test. This was the first time that I have done a AKC Temperament Test as it’s a relatively new event. There aren’t many of these events being hosted so when it came up that there was an event only a hour and half from me I decided I needed to go. I am a licensed AKC Temperament Test evaluator so I thought I should enter one and get titles on my own dogs before I start to evaluate others.
Temperament Testing is an important characteristic for any breed. There are several AKC Parent Clubs which are currently participating in having the AKC recognize their breed as having passed a temperament test or certification. Some Parent Clubs have their testing administered by the American Temperament Test Society (ATTS) and some conduct their own testing. AKC will recognize either upon a Parent Club’s request. Owners of dogs who pass, can apply to have a temperament test title placed on their dog’s AKC record and receive an AKC certificate of title. Owners can request this recognition by using the Temperament Test Title Application. ~ AKC~
Breeders in particular find this most useful when incorporating qualities associated with sound temperament into their breeding program. A temperament test or certification measures a dog’s reaction or behavior to various elements presented to them such as a stranger, usually of varying degrees ranging from neutral and friendly, to threatening and aggressive. A measure is also conducted on a dog’s reaction to auditory stimulus (gunshots) and reaction to visual stimulus (umbrella pop). There other environmental exposures such as unusual footing. An example would be to have a dog walk on a very unfamiliar surface. The dog’s reactions are monitored for displays of unprovoked aggression, panic, or strong avoidance, all of which would usually be grounds for failure. ~AKC~
To receive a ATT title you need to pass two temperament tests by two different judges. There were two events held on Saturday so we had a change to pass the two tests.
Gertie passed both events so pending AKC approval she has earned her ATT title. Her new name is: Sand Spring Strong Spear CGCA CGCU TKA DS ATT SPOT-ON
It was now Slammer’s time to test.
Slammer passed both events so pending AKC approval he has earned his ATT title. His new name is RO2 U-CH Sand Spring Throw The Book At Him JH THDN CGCA CGCU TKA FDC DM ATT SPOT-ON
This was a really nice test that the judges set up. Thanks to the club and all the volunteers for all they did to make this a successful event.
congrats Gertie and Slammer!!!! I’ve tried to do this test to avoid the NAT and the FT, but they didn’t agree… thought I can back out from the hunting tests that way LOL
