America’s Most Popular Dog Breeds

America’s Most Popular Dogs

Dogs vary greatly when it comes to size, behavior, characteristics, temperament, and amount of care or exercise required. However, they all have two things in common. One – they all evolved from the same species – the gray wolf of Central Asia – thousands of years ago. And two – they are the best friends mankind could ever hope to have.

Today, there are more than 330 dog breeds in the world, though the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes only about 190 of them. Recently, the organization released its annual list of popular dog breeds in the United States. Let’s say that no one was surprised when the gentle, intelligent and family-friendly Labrador Retriever retained its No.1 spot as America’s most favorite dog for the 26th time in a row. The loyal and courageous German Shepherd and the kind and trusty Golden Retriever followed close behind at the second and third places. Curious and cute beagles and dignified and equable bulldogs rounded up the top five. We are happy to not even be a fully accepted breed until 2018 and then hope to never be real popular. Popularity leads to a lot of dogs in the hands of the wrong people just because they are well known.

Going with the crowd isn’t usually my thing, so I can’t believe we’ve had three of the top 5! I’d say we’d be more original next time, but I’m pretty sure we won’t be able to resist getting another beagle! I guess once you fall in love with a breed, it’s hard to change over.
