DNA Profile For Dogs ~ What is it and why use it?

AKC DNA Profiling is for parentage verification and genetic identity purposes only. It does not provide information regarding genetic health, conformation, performance ability, coat color, etc. The sire and dam must have DNA profile on file to confirm parentage. AKC DNA testing is for purbred AKC registerable breeds only. ~AKC

How does this work? In humans and dogs alike, each gene is present as two copies (displayed as letters). Offspring receive one copy of each gene from each parent in a random process.

This technology does not use actual genes, but other DNA sequences that are also inherited one copy from each parent.

The DNA Profile Program is for owners and breeders electing to add value to their breeding programs by eliminating concerns or questions about identification and parentage. ~AKC

So you want to DNA profile your dog how do you go about it?

First you can go to the AKC website and order the DNA kit, you can do so by clicking HERE. The kit is $50.00 or $45.00 if you prepay it. Once ordered you will get the kit in the mail. The kit will contain the swab used for collecting the DNA and the form to submit with the sample. You will take the swab and insert it into the dogs cheek pouch and roll it around, let it dry and then send back to the AKC for analysis. You have to sign a statement stating that he/she has correctly identified the dog tested. You will get a letter back with the results in about 6 weeks and if you would like a pretty certificate like the one below you will need to submit another $10.00 to get the certificate.

AKC DNA Profiling is required for: Frequently Used Sires (dogs having the greatest impact on the AKC Stud Book); imported breeding stock; dogs whose semen is collected for fresh-extended or frozen use; and for the sires, dam and puppies for Multiple-Sired Litter Registration. ~AKC

Frequently Used Sires  – A dog that is sired 7 or more litters in his lifetime or more than 3 litters in a calendar year. Once analysed all subsequent Registration Certificates and Pedigrees will include the DNA Profile Number for that dog (including those for sire and dam, grandparents, etc., if their Profiles are on record).

Frozen Semen Litters – Any dog collected for frozen or fresh-extended semen use after October 1, 1998, must be AKC DNA Profiled (Click here for more information). Litters produced by frozen semen count towards qualifying a dog as a Frequently Used Sire. However, if the semen was collected before October 1, 1998, a DNA Profile is not required.

Multiple Sired Litters  – The American Kennel Club allows for the registration of litters with more than one sire. (Click here for more information).

Imported Breeding Stock -Effective for imported dogs registered on or after March 1, 2006, any imported dog registered with the AKC must have an AKC DNA profile prior to registering its first litter whelped in the United States. This requirement does not affect foreign dogs registered with the AKC before March 1, 2006. This requirement applies to both males and females and will be used to verify future generations produced by these dogs.

You can find all the information regarding the DNA profiling on the AKC DNA Resource Center website by clicking HERE.

I needed to do the DNA Profiling on Gambler because I had his semen frozen to be used at a later date.

Wow! That is fascinating! I had no idea that you could get such details. A family member had an AKC registered dog and they received a letter after a year or so saying the dog wasn’t full-blooded and revoked his AKC status. I wonder if that is how they determined it.
