What happens in the Rooster room stays in the Rooster room unless your mom has a blog!
Last week I made an appointment to take Gambler in to my reproduction vet Veterinary Village to have his semen collected and frozen for future breeding’s. Dr. Greer is the author of Canine Reproduction and Neonatology, publicized by Teton NewMedia, the information about semen, collection and freezing with a * was taken from her book. If you are interested in this book you can purchase it on Amazon by clicking HERE.
Gambler is going to be 5 years old this May so the time was now if I was going to have him collected and froze. *Any age male that is still able to produce viable sperm can be collected, but in some cases, older dogs tend to have semen that does not tolerate freezing as well. *The typical male dog produces (10 million) sperm per pound of body weight. This is 1 billion sperm for a 100 pound dog. In general, 100-200 million sperm are used for a frozen semen breeding.
Gambler was focused on the clinic cat. When you do a semen collection you should have a “teaser bitch” available to ensure a good collection. Some dogs can be collected without a teaser bitch but the amount maybe reduced. It helps to have a teaser bitch to get them aroused and in the mood so to speak so a good collection can be done.
Before a collection is done a physical exam should be done to ensure the stud dog is healthy, genetic health screenings and a blood draw and negative Brucellosis test should be done within 3 months. *Brucellosis is a bacterial disease which is most frequently transmitted between dogs by sexual contact. Brucellosis not only can cause health problems for the adult dogs, but it can also cause sterility, abortion and early puppy death.
*A complete semen analysis includes evaluation of the semen volume and gross appearance, sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm morphology.
After a collection is done a complete semen analysis is done. *microscopic evaluation for forward motility and morphology can be done easily and quickly using a warmed microscope slide with the sample under low power. *Although it is desirable to have 80% or more normal motile sperm in an ejaculate, stud dogs with much lower percentages of normal sperm can still sire litters if the sperm count is high enough and the bitch has good fertility.
So many good smells in a reproduction hospital.
Each room in the veterinary hospital is a different animal. The semen collection room just happens to the the Rooster Room.
This particular teaser bitch was in standing heat which meant she was ovulating. The female will “flag” when she is in standing heat, when they flag the tail goes up and to the side indicating that she will accept a male for mating.
A blood sample was drawn for a DNA profile with the AKC (American Kennel Club) as well as a cheek swab was taken for FTA card for archiving DNA for later testing.
Gamblers semen will be stored in a container similar to this until the time is needed. His collection will be stored at Veterinary Village/International Canine Semen Bank. When you freeze semen you fill out a form for the storage of the semen on that form it will ask you what you would like done with the semen in the event of your death. You can transfer it or have it destroyed. Be prepared to know what you want done when you do in, it can be changed at a later date but you should know what you would like to do.

Instead of a cigar Gambler got a snackie for doing such a great job, he has been collected twice now and this coming Friday will be another collection. Each collection so far he got two breeding units. I have been taking him back to get a few more breeding units.
ha! I guessed it…. the rooster wasn’t there without a reason. I will ask Easy’s vet when we see him for his annual exam. This post is brilliant, I have soda on my keyboard, but who cares…. yay for a new generation of little g-mans once :o)
Always be weary of the rooster! He is a sly devil!
Whoa…a PG version of mother nature-love it. Well done with describing everything and good luck with the freeze and future litters sired by G-man.
Thank you, I might be the only one that uses the Gman but that’s why I did it so “I” could have more gmans.
This post was so informative. In my mind I kept thinking Gambler needed a PlayDog magazine and some Barry White music playing! I will admit to laughing at the fact they use a “tease” for him. Is that where the term “What a tease!” originated? ☺
Yes yes I think it was where it originated because he didn’t even get to touch that pretty girl.
We have a vet friend in Germany who wrote her PhD paper on getting semen from dogs. She worked with a ton of dogs and we always found it to be the oddest topic!
It is a odd topic and your lucky I didn’t take pictures of the procedure, lol
Well, I never would have guessed that answer! Very interesting!
lol, I did love your previous comment “to get to the other side”
Doggie porn and snacks…what a great day!
Way to go G-man. It is funny that the collection room is called the Rooster Room.
Who knew? LOL. Gambler, nothing is sacred when your Mom has a blog…it looks like you were a pretty good sport about it though!
