You dog has nails, nails grow and then need to be trimmed to prevent injury.
5 tips to make nail trimming go smoothly.
- Start as a puppy getting your dog used to having his/her paws touched.
- Teach your dog to lay down on side for trimmings.
- Use a comfortable sharp nail trimmers like the one from GoPets.
- Clip off small amounts so don’t nick the quick, have kwik stop on hand just in case to stop the bleeding.
- Use lot’s of praise and treats during and after trimmings.
GoPets nail clippers is a nice clippers for trimming dogs toe nails. It is comfortable, easy to use and has some nice features.
There is a lock on the nail clippers to keep the blade closed when not in use.
There is a guard that can be slid into place to help gauge where to cut the nail so you don’t cut to deep. If you do happen to cut to deep and the nail starts to bleed have kwik stop powder on hand to stop the bleeding. If you don’t have kwik stop powder you can use corn starch or flour to pack in the nail. A metal nail file is available if need to smooth off the nails. The nail file is easily stored in the base of the handle.
I start by clipping off the whole nail stopping just before where the thick portion of the nail starts. I then clip off the right side of the nail then the left side of the nail. If I can’t see a bulls eye in the middle of the nail I will clip a little bit more of the nail. Once you see the black bulls eye in the middle of the nail you should quit clipping as that is the quick.
A video of me trimming Nellie’s nails.
Nellie’s toe nails after the trimming. If the nails aren’t kept short you run the risk of having your dog break a toe nail off and then that is a whole other post.
I have used many different clippers being a Veterinary Technician. I like using large nail trimmers when trimming large breed toe nails that are thick and strong. This nail clippers from GoPets was very sharp easy to use and very comfortable. It made trimming Nellie’s nails a breeze. GoPets has a small nail clippers to for the smaller pets.

Sand Spring Chesapeakes was given one nail clippers for a honest review.
Oh please come over and do Easy’s nails. It was great to see how easy and perfect you did Nellie’s nails. W have to call the vet next week for this job, I’m not brave enough to do it at home… and we know the results of my diy projects LOL
I so wish Haley was as relaxed as Nellie is when getting nails trimmed. She tolerates it, but sometimes she jumps as if it hurts her even though I’m not very close to the quick. I really like these trimmers, I’m going to order a pair as mine are the same type but getting older now. Great review, I’m sold! 🙂
We all get our nails done regularly. It is so important. If you don’t keep them short, the quicks get longer and it takes a while until you can cut them short again.
Though we did start early (when puppies) Rudy and Rosie really hate nail trims, so we do a one paw a day system. Less stressful for all of us.
Gambler hates it too even know I started him off young.
Way back one of our vet techs scared Linus with the clippers and he’s never really recovered. Since then we’ve used a dremel (which he tolerates much better) with him and the other pups.
oh no that wasn’t nice. I also train mine with a dremel. Thanks for stopping by.
Great advice and it looks like a good bit of kit too.
Those look like great clippers. Freighter still does not love to have his nails clipped. Sorry about the hop. Mr. Linky was having host issues. it looks fixed and should be back to business as normal next week.
You make it look so easy! Of course, it’s far more challenging when your dog keeps trying to pull their paw away. Luke is the worst, and I am not fast enough about it which makes it quite the project. It’s time to do it again though…I dread it and don’t trim them as often as I should.
Those look like great nail clippers! Quality nail clippers really make a huge difference!
