Tomorrow is John’s Birthday so I thought I would post up some photo’s of Norman with John. John got his first Chesapeake when he was 16 years old, he trained him to hunt all by himself and when I met John and hunted with them John would tell me that Bear was the best hunting dog he could ever have until we got Norman. John’s feelings changed and he then said that Norman was the dog of a lifetime and he will never have another hunting pal like he had with Norman. I feel the same way but I must admit his son Gambler is growing on me and I’m falling for him just like I fell for Norman.

This weeks #MultiplePetMania blog post theme is Multiple Pet Training. Here at Sand Spring we train multiple pets all the time since we have 3 Chesapeakes and sometimes I guess we train the cat. There are times in our training sessions that we need to train multiple pets at the same time. We do this because in hunt test situations you will have two dogs competing at the same time on the same test. They both won’t be running at the same time but they both will be watching the ducks go down at the same time and will need to sit there and not move. This type of situation would be called a honor for the one dog that already ran the test and needs to sit there and honor the running dog. The running dog watches the marks go down and is released on the bird, after the running dog is released the honor dog is released to go back to the truck. This can be a very difficult situation to train for since the dogs are hunting dogs and retrievers and they both usually want the birds. It takes many obedience lessons and continued training to keep your dog steady. This type of scenario is very helpful and used in real hunting situations to. As you can see from the above photo John is hunting geese in the wheat field. He is hunting with Glory but Norman decided to go sit by him. Both dogs need to lay in the field and not move until one of them is told to go make the retrieve.
