Homemade Chapstick & Hand Cream
My name is “JoAnn” and I am a chapstick addict! Gambler and Glory are chapsick addicts too!
Gambler and Glory are the first dogs that I’ve had that are in love with my chapstick. I can’t leave my jacket’s hanging on any chairs as they will try and dig in the pocket to get the chapstick out. This day Gman tipped over the chair trying to get at the goods. My keys have a chapstick attached to them also and they will jump on the counter to get my keys to get at the chapstick.
Gambler and Glory have eaten more tubes of chapstick then I can count on my two hands, for this reason I started looking into making it myself and seeing if I could save any money. I am buying chapstick on a monthly basis, at times I will by 6-8 tubes at a time and at $2-3 a tube it adds up quick with the chapstick mongers at home.

I did my research on Pinterest on different recipes and this is what I came up with.
1.5 oz Beeswax
2.5 Tablespoons Olive Oil
2.5 Teaspoons Coconut Oil
2.5 Teaspoons Shea Butter
1/4 Teaspoons Vit. E
20 Drops Pepperment Oil
If you want the chapstick harder add more beeswax add less of the oils & shea butter, if want it softer add less of beeswax and more of the oils & shea butter.
– Put about a inch of water in a pan and bring to a mild boil.
– Put solid ingredients in glass bowl/measuring cup place into pan so it creates a double boiler effect.
– Stir ingredients as it is melting, taking caution that the steam will become hot and the bowl will become hot.
– Once solids are melted (if use pelleted beeswax it will be about 10 minutes, if use block beeswax it will take 20-30 mins) add olive oil and vit e.
– Mix well time to check consistency if you want to by putting a spoon in mixture and taking out a small amount. Place spoon in freezer for a small amount of time take out and try out.
– If consistency is good add flavoring oils at this time, mix well and then fill chapstick containers using a pipette or dropper.
– Let stand and when firm cap and label.
3 oz Beeswax
3 Tablespoons (2.5oz) Coconut Oil
3 Tablespoons (2.5oz) Sweet Almond Oil
1/2 Teaspoon Tea Tree Oil
1/2 Teaspoon Vit. E
Can be used on your hands or on your pets paws, nose or elbows.
The above recipes made 15 tubes of chapstick and 3 tubs of hand cream.
Where I got my ingredients, containers and tips I learned from making.
Beeswax: Pellets – Amazon, Block (16oz) – Hobby Lobby or Bulk Apothecary
Vit E, Tea Tree Oil: Liquid 2-2.5oz – Walgreens
Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Peppermint oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Lavender Oil: Amish Store
Chapstick containers: Bulk Apothecary
Hand Cream containers: Hobby Lobby
Tips: Much easier to use beeswax pellets but if use block need a kitchen scale to measure out chunks you cut off. To cut I found it much easier to run a big knife under hot water and dry off then cut otherwise it took forever to try and get through it. I used a 1 cup measuring cup but if going to make a bigger batch I would get a 2 cup measuring cup so have more room to stir without spilling ingredients over. I would designate a old pan and measuring cups and spoon to stir because even after washing really good you can feel a slick creamy film on the stuff used. I liked being able to use liquid vit e vs capsules as I didn’t have to cut and squeeze the liquid out. If want to add color to lip balm chip off some lipstick into mixture while melting. Add the fragrance oils last so the fragrance holds up, the longer you cook the smell will dissipate. If heat up shea butter to hot it will become grainy when set. I kept the melted liquid in the pan of boiling water as I filled the containers to keep it from setting up while I was filling. Need to use a pipette instead of pouring using the measuring cup spout as I tried that and the liquid ran down the outside of the cup. Once the chapstick sets you can top it off to fill up the tube as it will settle and have a indentation in the middle.
Cost of chapstick not including my time .38, handcream $2.09
This was a fun easy crafty project that I will keep doing. I’ve had great feedback from the girls at work who sampled both products.
I want to say thank you to Susan over at Talking Dogs for coming up with the name for this batch. I posted up on Facebook that I needed a name for my stuff and she came up with: Norman’s Kisses. What a beautiful name!
Now the fun stuff a Giveaway. I’m giving away 3 sets of hand cream and chapstick.

Very creative solution to the chapstick munchers!
They are so naughty.
I love the name! and I’m sure that are really kisses from Norman. Easy is a lip balm junkie too, he ate the wonderful pomegrenade lip balm I’ve got from Molly. grrrr! I think I will try it too, maybe I can make some specially for the pup with liver sausage or sardines hahaha :o)
I hope you win then so you can get some norman kisses. I think of him each time I put it on.
I’m a Chapstick addict too, got that stuff everywhere! I love making this kind of stuff. I make my own soap. I for sure would love to try these!
Good luck! I tried making soap too but don’t make it anymore.
So creative and industrious! Love the name and would love to try it _ I’m in!
Good Luck, and thank you! I am partial to the name too
I would LOVE to try this. I’m addicted to the chapstick (mostly at night) but still none-the-less I love it. And I so love the name. What a great tribute to your boy.
Good luck! I keep chapstick by my bed and I apply it several times during the night.
What fun! And you like it, huh? This looks like a great project!
It was fun and I love it. The people who use it say how it really stays on and keeps your lips moist. I think so too, but I am a addict so I have to keep re applying it.
Oh my goodness! I am so glad that you posted these recipes. You are the first person I know that makes her own Chapstick! I am very impressed. I have a super easy handcreme recipe on my Pinterest but I must add these!
Now I have to go check out your easy hand cream and compare it to mine.
What a fun project. I am not a chapstick addict. I really should use it more. 🙂 So you went to the Amish store? 😉
Yes those damn amish got my money and I may have to go back as they are close and they have the ingredients. It was a very fun project.
Neat recipe there! Mama would love having an endless store of homemade chapstick! BY THE WAY: I just nominated you for the Liebster Award! Thank you thank you for the nomination, I already headed over to say my thanks. Good luck
What a great tutorial!! This would be so much more expensive to buy than make, so you definitely won me over!
Thank you so much for stopping by. Good luck
I love the branding. Will look out for you on QVC soon.
Got my bags backed already!
Super cool! I hope I win! Then I can give it to my mom for a late Valentine’s Day gift 🙂
I hope you win too your mom will love it! Thanks for the follow and stopping by.
Wow, what a great tutorial!!! We are saving this post forever!!! You need to go on Shark Tank! BOL!
Well thank you very much, I hope you win then when you try it you might take back your comment on going on shark tank or maybe you will send me there? 😉 Good Luck.
Hi, my name is Jan and I am a chapstick….and a hand lotion….addict!! I am always looking for all natural, cruelty free products for these, and they are usually not cheap. It never occurred to me to make my own. What a great idea! I love the name too, what a great idea by Sue.
What a great idea – I will need to summon the patience! Harvey is a chapstick/lipstick fiend too – it lasts all of 5 minutes when it’s actually on my lips! At least this way you know exactly what’s in it – thanks for sharing 🙂
Holy fluffy this is awesome. I go through chapstick like crazy as well! Thankfully mine aren’t chapstick thieves 😉
I just entered the giveaway 🙂 I have chapsticks on me at all times, too…whether it be in the car, in purses, or jackets!
I use lip balm pretty regularly, but I don’t think I would call myself an addict!
Wow! This is totally awesome!!!! Maybe they won’t eat the tubs…if they do at least it won’t hurt them!
Since I’m the one who suggested the name (and I’m so glad you like it!), I feel strange not entering the giveaway. I just don’t use chapstick or lip balm. Looks to me like you’ve got the start of a great little cottage business and you may end up thanking those crazy dogs 🙂

Yes! I am a ChapStick addict! I love the ChapStick that comes from Avon in the pink tubes. I have been using it since my first sinus surgery over 20 years ago! My husband is using my Avon chapstick (that i hoard) now as he was just diagnosed with congestive heart failure and us on oxygen 24/7.
I am also constantly putting on hand lotion and your lotion sounds so hydrating! I love having soft hands!
I love that you included the recipe!
We have eight rescued dogs that are our babies but, thankfully, they do not try to eat ChapStick.
Thank you!
Thank you for stopping by, good luck and hugs to your doggies.
Thank you!
