Not Your Typical Bird Dog

At Sand Spring Chesapeakes we have a bird pen. We raise chickens, ducks, pheasants, guinea hens and anything else that comes along. The birds are all kept confined in a wire pen with a net on top. They have access to a chicken house to lay their eggs and get out of the weather.

I just love Guinea Hens.

A little of this and a little of that.

From puppy on our Chesapeakes come into the pen with us or more like I don’t have a hook on the inside of the door so they push the door open with their muzzles and come on in. Of course the puppies think it is a free for all and they chase the birds, sometimes they catch them other times they just run around and then I get them out of there.

As they age they still come into the pen and they aren’t worried about the birds they are worried about the eggs and food scrapes I throw into the pen.

Here is Glory hanging out with me as I fill the pools and she just cruises along trying to find eggs. The guinea hens were doing their job they came over to see who the intruder was and make their noise trying to scare off the intruder. Glory wasn’t having any of their shenanigans, she ignored them and continued on her way.

What kind of bird dog is that??? She doesn’t care about the ducks or the pheasants  in which she trains with and hunts she is more worried about getting a morsel for her stomach.

If the birds are in the pen the dogs know they are off limits if the birds escape the pen then the game is on and they do catch the birds for me so I can put them back in the pen unharmed.

Soon I would like to release the guinea hens to the great outdoors so they can wonder around the farm and eat ticks but I’m not brave enough yet. The dogs will chase them and try to catch them, the only good thing is the guinea hens can fly so they could get away from them but I’m not ready yet for a training lesson.

Have a great day!

They probably understand these birds, for some reason, are part of the family. We chase cats all the time, but not our own at home. Not sure what would happen if we had a pet wabbit, but Mom doesn’t want to find out.

I turned on the video and Pierre started barking at the guineas! LOL! Wag N Woof has guineas and loves them.

That’s so cute! Barley was the same way when we took her into the cat room at the shelter to see how she’d react to cats–she just cruised looking for kibbles that had fallen out of the cat kennels and ignored all of the hissing cats and paws swatting out between the bars.

They sound like a bunch of rusty hinges. 😉 My dog liked to chase our chickens too, but I was able to call her back so the chickens could eat bugs and grass in peace.

How charming! Sam forgot his poodle DNA made his a fowl water retrieving dog and Elsa isn’t quite sure though she seems to get closer to blackbirds in our neighborhood. One of these days those guys will show her who’s the real ‘hood boss. LOL

I love it! I sure wish Luke would ignore the birds like that. Well, he does at times, if they are quiet and not flopping around. I wish we’d had the birds when he was a puppy so we could have trained him better with them.
