Preacher is a retriever more so a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Chesapeakes are known for their hunting ability. They are bred with natural hunting ability on board but they also need many months/years of training to perfect the ultimate hunting dog. This starts out at a very young age.
Preacher was only 10 weeks old for her first pigeon training session. There will be many more sessions to come. This is a great way to gain some fitness while training for what Chesapeakes do best.

Amazing she can do that at such a young age. Even though we are scent hounds, we don’t really start using our talents until we are about six months old. She will be a great hunter one day.
That is not completely different from Chessies. Yes they have prey drive as young pups, but there ability to scent things develop as they mature. Freighter was slow to get going, but of the three he might have the best nose and that is saying something since all three have excellent noses. I hope Preacher gets her daddy Thunder’s nose because Thunder also has an excellent nose. Of course she has mama Glory so she should be covered. 🙂
You can see how into it she is – such natural ability and so cute. Is that a live pigeon?
That is the cutest thing ever! ♥ She is really enjoying herself and so is your husband. LOL!
How exciting! It looks like she’s absolutely loving this!
Amazing snaps! She’s brilliant!
She is so cute! Is that pigeon alive?
Yup the pigeon was alive, it gets the puppies motivated.
She is so darn cute, and she looks like she is a natural (and having lots of fun)!
Wow, how amazing to see such a young pup instinctually do what she was meant to do! So the pigeon wasn’t hurt at all? I think I once read that dogs who are bred to hunt birds have really soft mouths.
the pigeon wasn’t hurt it was put back in the pen.
She was so excited and so fun to watch them having so much fun. She is going to be be great. Also amazing that she held it so gently so young. Mica has always had a soft mouth with everything, Aspen has a very soft mouth with his toys, never tears them up. Unfortunately I have a hard time getting his soft mouth. Got to work on not using teeth on people before we start water rescue
She is just adorable!!
Preacher is so cute and awesome! We start training young too. There’s always something that can be done!
Looks like Preacher is having a blast with training!
