When Slammer was 4 months old he was entered into two UKC HRC started hunting tests. This is a very young age to enter a puppy as they are just getting started in retrieving and playing the game. We entered him because we had our other dogs entered in higher level tests so since we were going to be there we thought we might as well enter him as he had been doing good with his retrieving. Needless to say he didn’t fair to well as it was at this time he decided he was smarter than us and that he didn’t need to return with the bird. It was much more fun to run a muck with the bird then have to give it up.
We kept on training Slammer and this past weekend we were running the big dogs again so we entered Slammer again in the started tests, he is now 6 months old. Saturday John took all the dogs by himself and ran the tests. He said Slammer slammed the test! He did a great job marking all the birds thrown and retrieved them nicely delivering them to hand.
Under judges Sharon Potter and Wade Zaffke he received his first started pass. Muddy Waters Retriever Club was the host club. On Sunday John ran Slammer again and this day he didn’t do so well. He went out on his first land bird. He ended up stopping short of the mark, even know he hunted and hunted he couldn’t come up with the bird. It was a nice try and we know we need to train for longer marks.
He loves playing this game so it’s going to be fun training and running him in future competitions.
A lot of time just even a few weeks of more maturity can make a huge difference when we are puppies. Congrats, Slammer!
That’s so cool to get this pass. Congratulations on a job well done. The Slammer boy runs in some fine circles, literally and genetically.
Slammer is doing great for only six months old!! Congratulations!
He’s showing great promise already – good job, Slammer!
