Some of life’s beautiful moments are definitely spent with my dogs. This day it was spent with Nellie. It happened to be November 3rd, this day is a very special day to me because it was the day Nellie’s father Norman was born. On this day to celebrate Norman’s life and giving me Nellie I took her with to go pheasant hunting.
I was sitting in my truck waiting for a bowhunter to leave the field. While waiting out of the corner of my eye I seen a bird land in the field in front of my truck. I got a glance of only it’s spread wings. I thought it must be a hawk so I watched to see if it was going to get up and fly again. It never got back up so I decided it must be a pheasant. I told Nellie this one was for her! She is now 12 years old and she gets around ok but she has a limp now so I try to limit her time out and about let alone hunting in a field with dips, holes and everything else. This bird landed about 200-300 yrds out in the field with tall cover. We marched on out there to see what we could do about it. Nellie took the lead and off we went. She wasn’t picking up any scent so I thought we might not get this one or I didn’t have a good site on it. Then all of a sudden her tail started wagging (which is a great sign they are on a scent) and she took off after the scent. All of a sudden she flushed up the pheasant rooster and I shot it. She ran over to it to retrieve the bird and then just stood there. She has a habit of standing on the birds in her old age and not retrieving them. Below is a video of Nellie retrieving the pheasant.
After out photo shoot in the field Nellie didn’t want to give up the bird and carried it all the way back to the truck. Below is a video of her walk. Her tail never stopped wagging. She was so proud of her bird as well she should be. I was so proud that she was able to get a bird today on this very special day.
Nellie got her photo taken next to our truck where is has her picture on it. She was much younger then I think around 3. #shestillhasit
We are allowed 2 birds a day so I got the other dogs and we went after one more pheasant in which Glory was the one to flush it up and retrieve it. A great day for Mom and Daughter!
After our hunt we stopped by the cemetery and paid respect to Norman. This is my special spot I go to when I want to be alone. My mom, dad, dad’s father and mother along with many family pet’s ashes are buried here.
When I got out of the truck and went over to the memorial this headstone is what I seen. I didn’t know my aunts and uncle were having this made for gpa and gma. They told me it was a rock selected from my grandparents homestead before it was torn down and made into farmland. What a special rock and a very special tribute to them. I love it!
Nellie strolled around the special spot like Norman did right before he passed. They look so much alike it was a bittersweet day. Thank you Norman for Nellie and thank you Nellie for being beautiful.

Yay for Nellie! It is so special to see the seniors enjoying themselves. I’m so glad you all had such a perfect day. ♥
Lucky Nellie to get a bird! What a beautiful pheasant. The feathers are beautiful.
AWW she is so happy to be doing what she loves and being useful still! And she’s as beautiful now as the day she was photographed for the truck.
Love how their coats perfectly blend into the scenery this time of year. great shots.
Good job Nellie. That was a big bird!
