Monday Mischief

DSC_0471

Monday’s mischief was talking about Gamblers hunt test where he wouldn’t release the bird. This whole week in training Gambler released the bird nicely. We tried to re in-act the test but we couldn’t get him to do it. I’m not quite sure yet how we are going to fix the problem if we can’t get him to do it in training. When your at a test you can’t speak loudly or intimidate the dog so we can’t correct him there. We will keep working at it.

Tuesday’s Tails

MK had her first vaccination appointment this week at work. Monday MK had blood drawn for a Feline Leukemia test. This was sent to the laboratory and the results were back on Tuesday for her exam first FVRCP vaccination.

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)
Authored by: Becky Lundgren, DVM

Feline leukemia virus, a retrovirus, is a common infection of cats. It is the cause of more cat deaths, directly or indirectly, than any other organism and is widespread in the cat population.

Disease Transmission
Feline leukemia virus infection (FeLV) can be transmitted several ways:

  1. by the saliva of infected cats contaminating the eye, mouth, and nose membranes of non-infected cats via licking.
  2. by passing infected blood to non-infected cats.
  3. from mother to fetuses (developing kittens) during pregnancy.

Disease
Most infected cats eliminate the virus and become immune. In those cats that do not develop immunity, the virus spreads to the bone marrow.
Proliferative and degenerative diseases may occur in any of the tissues invaded by the virus, or the virus may be indirectly responsible for other illnesses because of its immunosuppressive effect. A large percentage of the cats that are exposed to the virus will have latent (hidden) infections and will be capable of transmitting the disease in saliva, tears, and urine. Some of these latent carriers will become clinically ill when stressed.

MK’s test was negative so she got her exam and was vaccinated.

Here is the picture from the day her leg was broken and she became a member of my family.

The orthopedic surgeon palpated MK’s leg and said it was healing nicely. Her leg is about the same length as her other one. I will have it re xray’ed when she has her spay surgery. She is running around, climbing everything and doing well.
