Too Smart For His Own Good

Gambler is too smart for his own good, he is like a devious kid that does stuff to get his way. Let me set the scene. One afternoon I was sitting on the couch minding my own business and the dogs were hanging out doing their thing what ever that is in the house. I hear Gambler scratching at the door to signal he wants to go outside.

Is anyone listening I want to go outside?

Gambler is always wanting to go outside so I ignored him thinking he would give up and go back to doing dog things.

Look at this cute Santa sitting here.

Santa you are ugly I knock you down!

Since I ignored Gambler he marched into the living room where I was sitting on the couch he walked up to my Santa statue and the poked it with his nose and pushed Santa onto the tile floor and looked at me. I couldn’t believe he just did that. He didn’t get what he wanted so he came and did something to get me to get up and since I was up I might as well let him out right? This isn’t the first time Gambler has done this trick. One night while I was sleeping on the couch he scratched on the door to go out and I ignored him to and he walked over to the Christmas tree and knocked a ornament off the tree. I had to get up because Guilty ended up grabbing the ornament so then since I was up he got his way and I let him outside.

I’m a nice boy I wouldn’t knock Santa off the hearth.

What crazy things do your dogs do to get your attention? Gambler is the only one of my dogs that do this stuff. He is too smart for his own good!

    Gambler:)
Here there is not a door or cupboard that Musket cannot open.
If he wants to go out( and he always wants to go in and out) he will cry at door and then come get me and if I say ” you just went out” he might go over to water bowl and knock it off stand so I have to get up and go clean it up.
If he doesn’t get my attention he will keep pouncing on the door and with his nose or paw he will pick up the match and then nose out the door.
He knows how to get back in as well as he gets his paw on the latch and then pushes the heavy wood door open with his nose .

During the rare times that my Scupper couldn’t find room on the sofa, she would bark and start to run to the door as if she heard something or someone at the door. All other dogs would leap off the sofa and Scupper would run back toward the sofa and claim her spot. She used this tactic many times so we know for sure that it was a well-planned and executed strategy to get what she wanted. Well-played, Gambler!

Love it!!! Dakota did something last night he had never done. I always share popcorn with him and I throw him a piece and make him run and get it. Last night, he didn’t want to run and get it so he got on the couch and stood there having me hand it to him….then….when I wasn’t giving it to him when he wanted it he reached his paw out and started tapping my leg as in “Hey Lady get moving!” He did that numerous times and I never taught him to do that! Dogs are so smart!

“Ignore me at your peril!” LOL – he is definitely too smart for his own good! Luke hasn’t tried this type of thing yet, but I wouldn’t put it past him to try too. He pretty much knows he’s going to drive me crazy by just staring at me and whining – he has far more patience than I do!
