Gambler is 5.5 years old and is a hunting machine. He loves to go hunting, it doesn’t matter what he is hunting he loves to be out and about in the woods, marsh, field, water. Where ever the birds are he is there. This day he didn’t have to go far. John and Guilty were in our line fence by the house shooting doves when they saw a woodcock go flying down the line fence close to the house. John called me and told me he saw a woodcock head towards the house so I got my gun my dog and away we went.
I headed to the end of the line fence, sent Gambler in and told him to hunt it up. He was off and running. This line fence was full of trees and shrubs that we had to weave in and out of. Gambler was up ahead when I came across the woodcock and flushed it up. It flew further down the line fence and landed in the trees so off we went to try and flush it up again. This time Gambler got on it’s scent and flushed it up. I shot as it was heading out into the marsh. I got it!! Gambler went off to retrieve it but had a hard time finding it. It’s such a small bird with a different kind of scent he wasn’t sure what he was doing. John ended up going out in the marsh with Guilty and Gambler and found the bird. He gave it to Gambler to bring back to me and get a picture taken with his very first woodcock. We ended up cleaning it and eating it which I was a little scared to do. People told me they like it others told me it tasted like worms since that is what they like to eat. I had it so camouflaged with seasoning it really didn’t taste like anything. It was a fun 20 minute hunt just stepping out the door to our house.
You all are serious hunters!
Wilson Would Want a Woodcock 😉

“Wockcock”
Tastes like …
Pierre is now questioning why I never shoot the squirrels that he “flushes” out of the trees! LOL!
Wow, sounds like Wild Kingdom in your neighborhood!
You did well! I’ve seen those in action in the woods and they don’t look like they’d be easy to get.
OK, I have to say that I would probably pass on trying it! Plus it only looks big enough to be an appetizer, not a whole meal. 🙂
Sounds like fun. Woodcock=yuck!
