Nellie’s Vet Visit
Last Friday I took Nellie with me to work for her yearly vaccinations and heartworm check as well as an examination. As a senior pet it is very important to have a examination at least twice a year to make sure everything is working correctly. Diseases can pop up suddenly, you can not see what is going on with the internal organs so it is important to also run a yearly chemisty panel and complete blood count ( I did this last October, everything was normal).
Examining her teeth.

Examining her teeth.

For a nine year old girl Nellie’s teeth are doing very well. She had a dental cleaning 2 years ago when she was spayed.

Checking her lymph nodes.

Checking her lymph nodes.

The lymph nodes are palpated to make sure they are of normal size. If lymph nodes are reacting to an infection or if lymphoma in them they will be enlarged. You want to catch lymphoma early.

Listing to her heart.

Listing to her heart.

The heart is asculted to make sure no heart murmurs are heard  or if there was a previous heart murmur it hasn’t gotten worse which may mean early heart problems. Nellie’s heart sounded fine.

Palpating her belly.

Palpating her belly.

The abdomen is palpated to make sure no tumors are felt. The spleen and intestinal tract are known for getting benine and malganent tumors. Her abdomen was normal.

Nellie weighed in at 74#. She is ~10# over weight. We are working on taking that weight off with diet food and exercise.

Nellie was vaccinated for Bordetella, Lepto and Lymes. Her heartworm test was negative. She is good to go for another 6 months when she will have another examination done.

A very special thank you goes out to Lydia, Rosalyn and Sugar from See Beautiful for the special gift I got in the mail last week. I didn’t get the package until after my See Beautiful blog post was posted so I am taking time now to say thank you for such a wonderful See Beautiful package which included a beautiful hand written note, some forget me not seeds, a bumper sticker and my favorite mimosa hand soap that smells out of this world. Thank you for seeing the beauty in me and sharing your beauty with me.

Gambler is my clown boy, I call him a cornball, a dork and a knob. Those are terms of endearment as daddy Norman was all of them too. There is just something about male dogs that I love so much and it is their clown like personality, they live life to the fullest and don’t look back. Here Gambler is being silly in the pampas grass.

Who should attend BlogPaws 2014? BlogPaws conferences deliver educational sessions on topics ranging from finding content for your blog, to search engine optimization (SEO), to turning your blog into a business or a book, to holding fundraising events to using specialized contest apps on Facebook, and much more. While a majority of the attendees publish about — or in some cases AS their pets — the topics apply broadly to anyone who wants to learn more about effective use of social media and blogging.

A_norman

Thank you so much BlogPaws for including Norman’s picture along with Who should attend BlogPaws. This was a complete surprise when I opened my BlogPaws emailed newsletter and saw Norman first thing. He melts my heart so I hope he gets the word out and you all get over to BlogPaws and register for their 2014 conference in Las Vegas.

2013 A year in review
I want to thank WordPress for keeping tract of my stats and for putting together a nice year end summary. I am going to follow up on some parts of their summary. If you haven’t seen it you can see it here.
My Sand Spring blog was viewed 19,000 times. WOW is all I can say I would of never guessed it was viewed that many times. I thought I have a little po dung blog who would view it that many times. Thank you all for checking out my blog during the year!
I had 373 posts which surprised me also. I knew I was writing a blog a day and sometimes I did 2 blogs a day because I didn’t want to combine posts but didn’t realize it averaged out to really be a blog plus some a day. Funny thing is as some of you might know from my question and answers on some of my blog posts I hated writing as a young adult and nearly flunked out of English class in collage. I am terrible at grammar, spelling and all that goes along with writing. My friends get a kick out of my Facebook posts as they giggle at the way I write and say things. Nonetheless I love writing my Sand Spring blog and sharing our adventures with you all.
2013-11-06 09.58.50-1The busiest day of the year was Nov 7th 2013 with 264 views the post I made that day was This ‘N That Thursday post about saying goodbye to my soulmate Norman. You can read the full post here. This was a very hard post for me to write. As much as I was getting ready for this day it was still hard. Norman was my life and the reason I have Sand Spring Chesapeakes and the reason for my blog and he is no longer with me which makes me sad. That is why I chose to dedicate Saturdays to Nothing But Norman so I can keep his memory alive and so others can follow along with how this handsome fellow stole my heart.
Here are the posts that got the most views:

It was nice to see my friend Dina’s Chesapeake Casey in the top 5. He passed away just before I found out about Norman having osteosarcoma. Casey was a rescue dog that Dina got as a senior dog and he meant the world to her. He was a great guy that I wish I could of met in person. He and Norman are high in the sky causing all kinds of mischief.

It was a surprise to see that Nothing But Norman #17 was in the top 5. This was my story on saying goodbye to Norman and the process of cremation. I struggled with if I should do this post or not and I am so glad I did.

The top referring sites for referrals were:

So I thank you Jodi and Lisa for whatever you done to pass along my site and having people come to me from your site. You gals rock.

Your comments have helped me through some dark times in my life and I am so grateful for my online friends that I would be happy to call my online family. Cheers to you!

That sums up my 2013 year in review with WordPress and I hope 2014 is just as successful and hopefully one day soon I will be able to actually meet some of you face to face until then cyber hugs to everyone who stops by and takes a look at Sand Spring Chesapeakes.

A little of This:

Sand Spring Chesapeakes 2013 reflections

Here at Sand Spring Chesapeakes we have many 2013 reflections to look back on. We look back on them and smile with pride with what the year has brought and hope that the next year will be just as grand.

January 2013 Glory and I took the step to start showing in AKC conformation shows. I ended 2012 with getting Gambler & Glory’s  UKC conformation titles as well as having them both be in the 2012 UKC Top Ten Breed and Dog Standings, Gambler was #1 and Glory was #6. Since we got our feet wet and loved it we decided to move on to AKC but only with Glory.  We attended shows January – May then again in September. During this time Glory went Winners Bitch 3 times for 3 points towards her title, 4 Best Of Opposite, 3 Reserve Winners Bitch with one of those RW was against 4 other Chesapeake’s. I couldn’t be happier with the results as I am a novice handler and am still learning the ins and outs of dog showing and have a long ways to go.

Spring -Fall 2013 we trained and competed in UKC & AKC hunt tests. We had a successful hunt test season. We ended the season with Gambler becoming a UKC Seasoned Hunter and a AKC Senior Hunter adding a HR to the beginning of his name and a SH to the end of his name. Glory ended the season with 3 UKC started passes and receiving her AKC Junior Hunter title adding a JH to the end of her name.

June 12-16 2013 we attended the UKC Premier in which Gambler and Glory got invited to the Top Ten invitational being held on June 13th because Gambler was #1 Chesapeake and Glory was #6 in the 2012 Top Ten Breed and Dog Standings.  This was a memorial event because I shared this time with my friend Kathy Case of Whiskey Creek Chesapeakes who also had Chesapeake’s in the Top Ten and our friend Sapa who came along and cheered us on with her Chesapeake Luta. It’s nice when you can get together with your fellow Chesapeake friends and make memories. The memories that Sand Spring made were:

Gambler tried Lure Coursing for the first time, he didn’t fair to well on his first run so I thought he didn’t have it in him so I pulled him from the second run. He did get to run again the following day and then he figured it out and had a blast at it finishing both times for 2 out of his 3 runs for a Lure Course title. This year we will try and finish out that title. Glory couldn’t participate as she was in season.

Glory did get her feet wet learning how to Dock Jump for the first time. She started out with a jump of 6.8 ft and ended with a jump of 12.2 ft. She ended with needing one more splash for a novice title and three more splashes for a junior title which we will work on this year.

Gambler shined with his first time Dock Jumping. He started with a jump of 3.8 ft ending with 18.2 ft for his United Senior Jumper title. Once he figured out what he needed to do he would just fly into the water. This title added a USJ to the front of his name.

Results from the Premier:

June 12th
Gambler
United Retriever Specialty
won Best Of Breed
Received Total Retriever ribbon for having a show title as well as a hunting title.

 June 13th
Top Ten conformation show
Glory
2nd place and was awarded the Award of Execellance

 June 14th
UKC conformation show
Glory
Reserve Winners

 June 15th
This was the UKC conformation with Total Dog show
won BOB
Total Dog Qualifier ribbon for having a show title as well as a hunting title. He went into the Total Dog Gun dog show ring with ~30 other gun dogs and was picked 5th out of 10 dogs for Total Dog.

 June 16th
UKC conformation show
Gambler
won BOB
Glory
won Reserve Winners

November 11, 2013 was a highlight for Gambler as he competed in 2 UKC conformation shows taking the Champion ribbon in each show as well as BOB in the first show giving him enough legs to receive his UKC Grand Champion title adding U-GRCH to the beginning of his name. It was at this show that we were approached by a gal to do therapy work with Gambler and Glory. We decided that we wanted to make a difference in the life of others doing therapy work so we did the evaluations and on Dec 4th Gambler and Glory received their Therapy Dog Certificates thru Therapy Dog Inc. We are excited to begin our therapy work in 2014.

Congrats to the puppy owners who have received titles and to the other puppy owners that have provided a great home and love to all of our puppies. Without you there would be no Sand Spring Chesapeakes.

We did suffer one great loss this year. We sent our foundation stud Norman to the great migration in the sky where he will forever be retrieving birds pain free. He was with us for 13 years and is the reason Sand Spring is who it is today. Norman was our first competition dog we only ran UKC & AKC hunt tests with him but during that time he taught us a lot about the game and about having a heart dog. We have come a long ways since 11/3/00 but we will never forget how we started and will look upon his children and grandchildren to carry his name in pride. HRCH Sand Spring Norm of Caroway MH 11/3/00 – 11/6/13.

Thank you Playful Kitty

Thank you Playful Kitty

First off I am so behind on thanking my latest award person or rather Kitty’s. A big thank you goes out to Playful Kitty for nominating me for this fabulous award. Thank you so much I will proudly display it on my awards page. I just started following Playful Kitty and boy I have been missing a lot with the adventures of Cinco and Manna along with their mom Robin. They do some pretty great singing picture videos, love them so hop on over and say Hi!

The Rules of the Award can be found here.

Basically you need to thank the giver and put a link back to their site. Done

Nominate 15 bloggers for the award. I’ve given this award before so if you are visiting my blog and don’t have it grab the badge and join in the fun.

List 7 things about myself. Here goes:

1. I have a lot of DAA (Dumb Ass Attacks) and today I am up to #3700. I was using a scissors to dig out tea light candles to put in a container to melt them all down to make fire starters for the fireplace and I gouged my palm of my hand and blood every where’s.

2. I love to take pictures of my gang and love to post them all up, I can never decide on which is the best one so you poor folks get to see them all.

3. I would sit in front of the computer doing stuff all day long every day if I could.

4. Even know I live in WI, I really don’t care for the cold weather and snow. The snow is pretty and all but I really can’t stand driving in it and being cold.

5. I’m not ready for Christmas, each year I think I am going to be more prepared and I’m not.

6. I send out 100 Christmas cards, my list gets bigger each year. I love friends!

7. I decorated for Christmas the first time in many years this year just so I could see Gman’s reaction to the tree and get Monday Mischief posts.

Thank you again Playful Kitty for my award.

Glory had her own hunt on last Sunday morning you can read about it here. After her hunt we took the whole gang out to public land and tried to get our limit which is 2 roosters per person. We hunted for a hour and only came up with one bird. Glory did manage to find a frozen dead pheasant that some other hunter couldn’t find. She was proud as a peacock when she came running up to us. Here are the pictures from the one bird we did get.

Came home from work last night to a whole lot of surprises.

First off I haven’t talked about it on my blog but some may have seen it announced on my facebook page yesterday. When I was at the dog show in November with Gambler and Glory I was approached by a gal who came over and sat on the floor next to Glory, she petted her, talked to her and talked to me about my dogs becoming therapy dogs. She was an certified therapy dog evaluater and would evaluate my dogs and I so we could become therapy dog members. I contacted Lisa the next week. I decided I would certify both dogs so when Glory was out because of being in heat or bred I could take Gambler. I met up with Lisa and she went over the stuff to become a therapy dog member, she then evaluated the dogs and I. She wanted to see what they did in different situations with people, wheelchairs, walkers ect. They both passed that part of the evaluation. Next they needed to do 3 visits in therapy situations. The first two visits were at a assisted living dementia  facility. Some of the residents just loved the dogs others didn’t want to see them. They both did great with their visits. The third visit was done at a school with children that have emotional disorders. We went in and the children read books to them. They both loved that. We passed our evaluations so off the paperwork went to Therapy Dog INC and we waited for our certificates as we couldn’t do any visits until we get our paperwork. The paperwork came in the mail yesterday. I will be starting my therapy work in the coming New Year. I am super excited about this.

Gambler and Glory's certificates.

What I thought was really special was that the certificate was issued on Glory’s second Birthday.

1482882_534519006638407_426550291_n

Second surprise was that I got Gamblers UKC Grand Champion show certificate in the mail also. It was at this show that he got his grand champion and was approached about becoming a therapy dog.

It just so happened also that the judge Polly who put Gambler up for a leg towards his grand champion title is another certified therapy evaluator who with Lisa own their own business called Canine Solutions LLC which is the place I went through for my evaluations and certifications. I will be joining their team and continuing to do my therapy work with them where I am needed.

Third surprise was I got my new show lead in the mail that my friend Kathy got me to show Glory in this coming show season. It has a little yellow ducky on it that is the cutest thing ever. The lead is just beautiful and I can’t wait to use it.

Monday I had off of work so we did a little pheasant hunting. I didn’t think we would see much as the 9 day gun deer season just finished and now was the start of muzzle loader hunting, with all that going on the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) doesn’t release any pheasants on public land so I thought we were just going for our exercise. I took my camera and was futzing with it and finally decided I better pay attention and just then Gambler flushed up a bird. It was too far out and I missed it (it’s my story and I’m sticking to it). We then moved to a different field that I really didn’t think we would see anything at. We walked to the end of a long dike and I thought we should just turn around and come back but then Gambler was off and about hunting again so I tried to find him and there went another bird. I didn’t even shoot as I knew this one was way to far but I watch where it went down. We went after it and it was in a whole bunch of trees and brush. Gambler flushed it up again, I shot but missed because the cover was too heavy. So no birds for us. Nice flushes bad shooting. Here are some pictures of the hunt.

MK here, I am thankful that brother Gambler broke my leg. That way I don’t have to live in the marsh and fend for myself. I have a cozy home that I live in now with constant food and pets and I get to sleep on the bed with two humans and 3 dogs.
Page5
Nellie here, I am thankful for my daddy Norman god rest his soul. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here today. I was very blessed to have spent 9 years of my life watching and learning from him. He was my mentor, he had pretty big paws to fill but I think I’ve about filled them.
glory
Glory here, I am so thankful for grandpa Norman rest his loving soul, without him I wouldn’t of had my mom Nellie and hence I wouldn’t be here today. I am also thankful that I was the chosen one out of 4 girls. I don’t know what was so special about me but I’m sure glad they kept me. I have been so blessed to have many birds in my life already with many retrieves in Saskatchewan. Can’t beat that!
Page3
Gambler here, last but not least I also am so thankful for my daddy Norman. Even know he cracked my skull when I was a little puppy I am blessed to be alive today (I guess that is why I was so naughty to MK, I hope the cycle stops with her) and able to call him my dad. He was one special chessy and I hope one day I can be just like him. I am also so thankful that my mom and dad still have me. I’ve given them many reasons to send me to doggy jail and they still love me so for that I am ever so thankful and will try to be a good boy in the years to come.

Today we are joining 2 Brown Dawgs & co-host Ruckus the Eskie  for their This ‘N That Thursday’s blog hop!
This is what they have to say about the hop,

A little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

“This ‘N That Thursday is for anything you want!  Maybe you want to post about unrelated topics, or each topic isn’t quite long enough to make up a whole post, or you have awards to share, or you have one long post…anything goes!  So grab the button and join the hop!”
If your my Facebook friend you might of known it was my 29th Birthday for the 3rd time on Monday. I had a binge of eating free Birthday meals to desserts that co-workers brought in to a delicious cherry pie my grandma made for me which I ate 4 out of the 6 pieces. So after all that sugar overload I needed to get some exercise. I managed 6 hours of exercise on my day off yesterday and of course my furkids were right with me exercising right along with me.
We pheasant hunted with my friend who has Nellie’s daughter Riley. We got our limit which was 4 birds but it took all day.
Here are the photos:

MK is doing so well. She is looking like a adult kitty now. She still plays with the dogs and thinks she is a dog. When it is time for bed and we go upstairs she runs right along side and jumps on the bed, curls up in a ball and sleeps with us. She spends most her time up on the bed. She doesn’t hardly want to go outside and if she does she comes back in after a few minutes as it is too cold out.

So that wraps it up for today, why don’t you hop on over to 2 Brown Dawgs & co-host Ruckus the Eskie see what their up to and grab the badge and join the hopping fun!

This past Saturday the gang got to so some pheasant hunting. Just as soon as we left the truck and hit the field they kicked up their first pheasant which Glory finally got to retrieve. We then continued on our walk, Gambler and Glory were hot on the scent of a pheasant. Gambler flushed it up, I shot and missed because it came right at me and was above my head when I shot. It went past me and John shot it. It landed in the water so Gambler got a water retrieve.

If you click HERE you can go into my Sand Spring Facebook page and see the video of the water retrieve.

Gambler and Glory love to be out hunting.

We continue on our way and went to the end of the trail where their were 2 pheasants that I kicked up during the week that I didn’t get. We took a chance that there would be one there. Low and behold there was one there. All dogs got on it but Gman was the winner who retrieved it.

All and all it was a great day. We were one shy of our limit but wasn’t because of enough birds, it was because of poor shooting.

Even know Glory didn’t win at the show on Sunday we got some practice in the ring which is always good.

Tuesday I had off of work so I took the gang hunting then also. It was a day of exercise as we didn’t flush up any birds. A day just being out hunting even if don’t get anything is a great day!

I have a favor to ask of my blogging friends. My friends Chesapeake Lewis has Canine Epilepsy, no one or no animal should have to go through a life of seizures, any help on our part even if small like “liking” a facebook page is beneficial to help out this cause.

Today Three Scoops Of Vanilla is hosting a fund raiser for The Wally Foundation.

This is what The Wally Foundation says about the fund raiser today and how to help out:

The Wally Foundation (TWF), a resource to assist owners of epileptic dogs and dog rescues afford epileptic medications and treatments, will be holding a fundraiser today, November 14th. The artist and owner of Three Scoops of Vanilla, Erin, has created custom jewelery pieces for TWF and Epilepsy Month. This will be a ONE DAY ONLY fundraiser hosted by Three Scoops Of Vanilla. TWF will be the only group featured on the 14th so 25% of ALL sales that day will go to The Wally Foundation automatically. Erin makes beautiful jewelry and other items. Please go to the link here and check out Erin’s website athttp://www.threescoopsofvanilla.com/

BECAUSE… she also offers an auction item during our event on her FB page. She auctions it off and at the close of the auction the high bidder pays Three Scoops of Vanilla a portion of their bid and pays TWF the remaining portion of their bid. 20% of the high bid goes to TWF automatically BUT we have the opportunity to receive a higher portion of the high bid by sending new fans to the Three Scoops of Vanilla Facebook page. Each new fan that she gets DURING our event gives us 1% of an increase in the amount of the auction item that we will get. For example: Let’s say to keep it easy, the auction item goes for $100. TSOV would get $80.00 and TWF would get $20.00 UNLESS new fans showed up that day and lets say 34 people became new fans during the event, we would now get $54.00 instead of the $20.00 from the high bid. We can actually get up to 100% of the high bid by doing this, all we need is just to have folks “LIKE”www.facebook.com/threescoopsofvanilla.

You can also stop by TWF fan page Thursday morning for more information. Or you can make donations to TWF via our website,www.thewallyfoundation.com, and look for the Paypal button.

IT’S TIME — THE WALLY FOUNDATION NEEDS YOUR HELP!

This is the piece up for auction.

Next, head over to Three Scoops and order your custom TWF fundraiser bracelet. Go through this link, to the “Custom Bracelet” (third one down).

http://www.threescoopsofvanilla.com/featured-groups-party-page.html

TWF will also receive 25% of the total sales we purchase today from Three Scoops today (not just our custom and auction pieces) so make sure Erin knows the order is for TWF!

Here is the custom piece you can order.

This ‘N That Thursday

I wanted to share more photos from our photo shoot last week.
This day will forever be etched into my heart. This was the last outing I had with my soulmate. I am so glad I had these pictures taken.
I don’t even know where to begin or what to say. Yesterday I joined in the new blog hop by Jacky and Peggy which was Give Cancer The Paw. I wrote that post last week, last week when Norman was doing alright. He was still limping and I could see the bone cancer was getting a little bigger but he was still managing to get around alright. I still didn’t know when the right time was going to be. I was hoping for another milestone with Norman but that all came to a end Tuesday night when I got home. I go out of town every Monday and come back Tuesday night, when I came back home Norman greeted me limping more than before, I saw that the tumor on his shoulder doubled in size. He was more unstable when he walked. John and I talked and our promise to Norman when he was diagnosed last June was that we would not let him suffer. He gave us 13 years of great memories and there was no way we would let him suffer in the end. He was going to leave this world in dignity and so Wednesday morning we took the final truck ride with breath in his lungs. When Norman’s soul went up to heaven and all that was left was his body we took another trip to the crematorium. I laid Norman to rest, a few hours later he was back by my side. I will write more about my experience doing priority cremation later. We will continue to Give Cancer The Paw as cancer will not win!
We submit our loved one into your loving hands, heavenly father.
Take care of him and love him dearly as we did.
Dress him in his heavenly body with renewed health and vigor
Once again to breath freely of sweetened air.Take care of him and love him dearly as we did.
Let our hearts be lifted and not saddened
As we commit his earthly body back,
Ashes to Ashes, dust to dust.He will live on in our memories and our hearts,
As surely as you have received our prayers.
We know that he will watch over us from heaven. We now submit our loved one into your heavenly hands.
