Adaptil To The Rescue

What is Adaptil?

Adaptil is a synthetic pheromone that mimics the pheromone mother dogs emit after giving birth to help their puppies feel calm and secure.  Dogs of all ages recognize this pheromone throughout life.

The Adaptil range of products offer help in many situations, both indoors and outdoors, and for short-term and long-term use.

Preachie and her Comfort Zone collar with Adaptil pheromones.

As you may know since Guilty went into season (in heat) Preacher has decided that Guilty isn’t her best friend anymore and wants to pick fights with her. The girls are kept apart from each other while Guilty is in heat but I thought I might as well try and introduce some calmness to the household.

The way I am introducing calmness to the household is by having Preacher wear a Comfort Zone collar which contains Adaptil pheromones. I also added a Adaptil room diffuser to  the living room where the dogs spend the most time.

I’ve used both the collar and diffuser before when Glory had her last litter with Guilty. It really helped Glory after her C-section. I saw a difference on how he took care of her puppies.

When Adaptil may not work:

There are some situations where Adaptil won’t work – or at least won’t work without additional concurrent therapy such as behavior modification or even medications.

1.  When the behavior is not stress-related

2.  When the behavior has been present for a very long time or the problems are severe.  Seek advice from a veterinary behaviorist.

3.  Overexcited dogs – an overexcited puppy is not going to be calmed down by Adaptil alone.  In this case, additional training is needed along with the use of Adaptil.

4.  Urination in the home due to a medical condition or lack of toilet access. Always get a clean bill of health from your veterinarian if your dog is house-soiling.

5.  Aggression towards other dogs or humans is a very serious problem. Seek advice from a veterinary behaviorist.

I am well aware that Adaptil may not work in the situation that I have going on in my household but for now I think it can’t hurt and it may just work if Preachers problem is the hormones Guilty is releasing. Guilty has about another 7-10 days left of her heat cycle so hopefully things will go back to normal and Preacher will be her friend again.

  • I was not asked to talk about Adaptil products, I did this post on my free will. I wanted others to know about this product in case they are having some problems at home where this product maybe helpful*

We tried that once, but it didn’t do anything for us, and we tried something similar for the cat a few years back and it didn’t work really either. I guess for some it does. Paws crossed for you.

Thanks for sharing about this, it might be something that could help Luke in some situations. I hope things get settled down there soon!
