Nothing But Norman #79

Happy Saturday All!

Project16 - Copy - Copy - Copy

This was from one of our hunts at Pheasant Creek Hunt Club. My friend Lynn was shooting and I was taking pictures. She is a guide at the hunt club with her pointers. I got to let Norman and Nellie get a few birds that day. I just love the first photo I’m going to show it in color too so you can see the beauty of the rooster pheasant in color.

Guess you really can’t see the color since I resized the photo. Norman used to point the birds before he flushed them. He was just a clown sometimes he would pounce on them like a mouse.

Once again Norman has come back to me. My best friend got me this set of glasses for Christmas. I thanked her for including Norman and she said “he will always be part of the family”. Thank you Amy, I love them!

Nothing But Norman #77

Happy Saturday All and Happy 2015 of Nothing But Norman!

Project16 - Copy - Copy - Copy

I was looking for a New Year’s picture of Norman and I couldn’t find any. I need to get better at organizing my pictures so I can find ones to go along with time frames. While searching I came across a photo where my chessie’s brought two people from many miles away together and a special friendship formed, this was taken in May of 2012 when Amy a facebook friend I never met before flew into WI to visit relatives and met me at a hunt test. It makes me smile that she got to meet Norman before he left this world. Without Norman, I wouldn’t have “my lines” or “my pups” nor would I have the great friendships that arose from the brown curly dogs. The friendships that develop between people who love dogs is something that can’t be replaced.

Chessie’s creating friendships Norman & Nellie with Amy & I.

Sisterhood

If you should feel sorrow or pain,
Let me share it with you,
And hold you close,
If you should feel happiness or joy
I will rejoice, and we will dance and sway,
laughter our song of praise

Every tear that you weep,
I shall catch, and turn them into rainbow gems,
Place them in Mother Earth
Where they shall grow and bloom,

Every smile that you smile,
Ten thousand of like kind,
Will lighten many a load,
And travelling at the speed of light,
Will return to you threefold,

We are joined through sisterhood.
And generations of women gone before,
We are as individual as the sun and moon,
But tempered of the same fire,
Therefore we are as one,

For as surely as the Wheel does turn,
We cannot shed this ‘knowing’,
Our power is in our strengths combined,
We are Woman…

And in that word,
Are the ties with which we’re bound.

{This Moment} See Beautiful~Successful Hunt Test Season

“The true measure of a man is not what he dreams, but what he aspires to be; a dream is nothing without action. Whether one fails or succeeds is irrelevant; all that matters is that there was motion in his life. That alone affects the world.”
― Mike NortonWhite Mountain

Last Saturday the Sand Spring hunt test season came to a end. Our season began in May and went through the beginning of September. The season is made up of training our two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Gambler and Glory to compete in AKC – American Kennel Club and UKC – United Kennel Club tests. They are similar but then again so different so you have to train for two different styles. This made for a full summer of many highs and lows as you all may know from following my posts on my blog and on facebook.

This last Saturday I had a major melt down. I went to the hunt test by myself and handled both dogs. It was the last test of the season and I really wanted to get that final Senior Hunter pass on Glory so she could earn her Senior Hunter Title before I breed her this winter. Needless to say Glory was dog one in the group and we failed. Being upset I had to go and handle Gambler now in his test. That didn’t go well either and we failed too. After I was done this is what I posted up on facebook on my Sand Spring Chesapeake page: If success was measured by how many tears were shed this hunt test season I would be a very successful woman. Till next year all it’s hunting time now!

I was feeling a bit sorry for myself and now that some time has passed I have realized that we indeed did have A Successful Hunt Test Season and with that comes See Beautiful!

What is success & failure?

The definition of ‘success’  & ‘failure’ from dictionary.com is:

success
–noun
1.the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.
2.the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
3.a successful performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.
4.a person or thing that is successful: She was a great success on the talk show.

This summer I was chasing the wrong meaning of success. I was chasing the hunt test passes and in the end the hunt test title. I got caught up in wanting to pass a test to “show” that my dogs could do it, that they could pass a test without fails. For some reason I had it in my head that fails were toxic and if people knew my dogs and I failed that we would be marked as failures and people would think less of us. My standards were set so high that when the fails came I didn’t know how to handle them and forgot about the real reason and success I was gaining with my dogs.

failure

                                                                                                                                -noun

1. an act or instance of failing or proving unsuccessful; lack of success:

His effort ended in failure. The campaign was a failure.

2. nonperformance of something due, required, or expected:

a failure to do what one has promised; a failure to appear.

3. a subnormal quantity or quality; an insufficiency:

the failure of crops.

4. deterioration or decay, especially of vigor, strength, etc.:

The failure of her health made retirement necessary.
5. a condition of being bankrupt by reason of insolvency.

6. a becoming insolvent or bankrupt:

the failure of a bank.

                                                                                         7. a person or thing that proves unsuccessful:

He is a failure in his career. The cake is a failure.

It seems for some reason society can’t measure one’s “success” by the deeds one does without gaining an award.

“What is a Title, Really?”

“Not just a brag, Not just a stepping stone to a higher title, “What is a Title, Really?”

“Not just a brag, Not just a stepping stone to a higher title,
Not just an adjunct to competitive scores.”

“A Title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor that
dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in the record and in the memory for about as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard. And though the dog himself doesn’t know or care that his achievements have been noted, a Title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.”

“A title says your dog was intelligent, and adaptable, and good-
natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that
please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed.”

“And a Title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend
time with him because he was a good dog, and that you believed in him enough to give him yet another chance when he failed (or you did), and that in the end your faith was justified.”

“A Title proves that your dog inspired you to have the special
relationship enjoyed by so few; that in a world of disposable
creatures, this dog with a Title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in
return.”

“And when that dear short life is over, the Title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of praise in one small set of initials before or after the name.”

“A Title is nothing less than love and respect, given and received permanently.”

I think everyone competing in an event should read this article: The Art of Losing

JoAnn’s definition of a Successful Hunt Test Season:

– Time spent with your dog(s)

– Time spent with your family and friend(s)

– Lessons learned

– All the See Beautiful moments that come your way

Things JoAnn has to remember:

– Rome wasn’t built in a day

– If someone thinks less of me and my dog for failing they can pound sand and are no friends of mine

– I am a novice trainer and handler

– Gambler is my first dog that *I* trained & handled by *myself*

– The end of last year was the first time I ran a Senior test

– This year was the first time I ran a Master test

– These kinds of tests are by no means a walk in the park and when I win the more accomplished I will feel that I did it alone just me and my dog

– Chesapeakes are not machines and need more than one day of training to run tests

– Gambler and I succeeded in passing one UKC Finished test this year

– Gambler, Glory and I received our CGC (Canine Good Citizen) & TT (Temperment Test) certificates

– Glory received her UKC HRC Hunting Retriever Title

– Glory received three out of four AKC Senior Hunter passes

– Gambler was the #1 Chesapeake in the UKC Top Ten Dog and Breed Standings for two years in a row

– My dogs don’t think any less of me when we fail, they think more of me for getting out there and training, running tests and doing what they were bred to do

– Win or loss their emotions are always the same, they lick my face, wag their tail and let me know they still love me

“Your passion is measured by the difference between your willingness to take actions and your desire to quit. When your desire to quit outweighs your willingness to persist, you are ripe for failure!”

Thursday Barks And Bytes

BB3

The co-hosts for Barks And Bytes are Linda from 2browndawgs and Jodi from Heart Like A Dog
The Barks:
This past Saturday we went to the annual ACC WI Chesapeake Day’s. It was a day of hanging out with some really great Chesapeakes and their peoples. I finally got to see and meet some of my Facebook friends. We started out with registration at the club house then we went out to the field to do some hunt test training on land the dogs did great and had a ton of fun. Next we went to the club house for some really good food and to buy raffle tickets for all the great stuff people brought to donate for the raffle. The raffle money goes for the next years events. After lunch we headed back to the field for water training. This was split into 2 groups, one for beginners and one for the advance dogs. When water work was done we went back to the club house to see who won what and then had a very nice steak supper with all the trimmings.
Here is a picture video of the day.

Sue, Patti and Pam from CRROW – Chesapeake Retriever Rescue Of Wisconsin were there with Yukon who needs a home and their rescue Radar Blind Chessie that Pam adopted.

One more day for the FREE Promo!

The FREE Promo for Diesel’s book is this Wednesday & Thursday (4/30 – 5/1). Grab your free copy today or tomorrow, get the word out and help out the shelter animals in need.

imageAmazon.com: Diesel the Shelter Pup: A True Story …

A true story about a little puppy that was adopted from the animal shelter. The puppy’s name is Diesel and he is a little Plott Hound Mix. He is adorable and we love him very much! This book was written for children to show them how lovable shelter animals can be and to also increase the awareness of the plight of shelter animals. I hope you think Diesel is as adorable as we think he is!

Here is the review I wrote after reading this great book: This was a well written cute book about a shelter adoption success along with getting the word out on adopting from a shelter vs buying a dog. I loved how she incorporated Diesels mom into the book to get the word out that she still needs a furever home. Just after I read this book Lilly got adopted. What a happy ending. Great pictures to go along with the story.

On certain Friday’s we are still going to the Elementary School and doing our therapy work with the children. The dogs are doing really well and figuring out their purpose. It’s going to be sad when we have our last visit for the year which will be in June. It seems like we just got started (which we did) and now it soon will be summer break. I have to check out therapy work for the summer.

WordPress Family Award

Miss Harper Lee presented me with the WordPress Family Award. Please drop by Miss Harper Lee blog and see what this beautiful Golden Retriever has been up too. The WordPress Family Award was started by Shaun @  http://prayingforoneday.wordpress.com. Here is a description of the award and the rules from Shaun:

Award Description:

“This is an award for everyone who is part of the ‘WordPress Family.’ I started this award on the basis that the WordPress family has taken me in, and showed me love and a caring side only WordPress can. The way people take a second to be nice, to answer a question and not make things a competition amazes me here. I know I have been given many awards, but I wanted to leave my own legacy on here by creating my own award, as many have done before. This represents ‘Family’ we never meet, but are there for us as family. It is my honour to start this award.”

Rules:

  1. Display the award logo on your blog.
  2. Link back to the person who nominated you.
  3. Nominate 10 others you see as having an impact on your WordPress experience and family.
  4. Let your 10 family members know you have awarded them.
  5. That is it. Just please pick 10 people who have taken you as a friend, and spread the love.

This ‘N That Thursday

this-n-that-3

Today we are joining 2 Brown Dawgs for their This ‘N That Thursday’s blog hop!

This is what she has to say about the hop,

“A little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

Yesterday I went training like I do each Wednesday at my friend Sandy Dollar’s-Cur-san’s property. She has such nice property with great technical ponds, channel ponds, lots of land space. It is a dog trainers dream and I am lucky enough to be able to train with her. She is so patient and helpful when I need training tips. She is been into breeding and training Chesapeake’s since 1967. I didn’t get Norman from Sandy but his pedigree is from Cur-San’s lines along with Caroway lines. Stop by and check out Cur-san’s Kennels.

Here are some pictures of our training day. We had Labrodor’s, Golden’s and Chesapeake’s running.

My UK Adventure – Day 8

My UK Adventure – Day 8

This morning is my last morning in the UK, for the last of my trip I got to spend the morning with Marie in the park. Steve took me to the park near their house so he could do a little training with Fender and Marie. He wanted me to see how Marie was doing before I went back to the states. The dogs get to come to this park quite often as there aren’t many spots to take your dogs to do any running let alone any training. They are fortunate that they have a couple of parks nearby their house where they can take the dogs and they work out  quite nicely since there are trails threw out the woods so you can toss marks and have the dogs retrieve in a straight line. There are open meadow areas where they can do marks or blind work.

I had great fun watching and taking pictures of the dogs working. This was another highlight of my trip; the time I spend with Marie was priceless. She is such a different dog than my own Gambler who is her brother. I raised both of them from 7 weeks to 7 months when Marie went over to the UK. When Marie and Gambler were growing up I called them the Terrorist as they would get into everything. I know now that it was mainly Gambler and Marie was just following along. She is the sweetest most quite dog ever. All she wants to do is please you and love on you. In the UK your dog needs to be very obedient and make no noise when competing, well Marie has that licked. Hopefully she will do well with her field work overseas. I can’t tell you how proud I am as a breeder to have a dog out of my breeding overseas. It’s something that one only dreams of and now I am living the dream as well as Marie.

Training time was done and time for me to grab my bags and head to the airport. Zoe was nice enough to take time off to drive me to the airport so I didn’t have to take the train by myself. We weren’t sure if my plane would be taking off or not since Hurricane Sandy was reaching the East Coast of the states and flights were being cancelled. The internet said my plane was on time so we shall see.

I said my goodbyes to Steve and Fender. I said my goodbyes and gave big hugs and kisses to Marie. I got in the car, Steve sat Marie he crouched down next to her and held up her right paw and waved her paw goodbye to me as Zoe was backing out of the driveway. At that moment a tear was shed. I was leaving my girl for the second time. It was bittersweet as I was leaving her with 2 people that loved her so much and I left knowing I would always have my memories of our time together.

We made it to the airport and my flight was on time. I hugged Zoe and thanked her for the great hospitality and great time. A friendship was made between 3 friends and I.

I boarded the plane and was ready for my 8 hr flight home. As the plane was taxing down the run way and I was staring out the window I thought to myself as I was watching London go behind me that I was one lucky girl to be able to have taken a trip of a life time and that it was. I have many people to thank for making this trip possible. Without great friends, family co-workers this wouldn’t have happened. This was indeed something I could cross off my bucket list but I’ve decided that I’m not crossing it off my bucket list until I make my return trip which I hope is very soon.
